If you've ever driven through the town of Fitchburg and found your way to main street, you may have noticed a large egg-shaped rock resting in the middle of an intersection. At first, you'll probably think, "Rock... in the middle of an intersection... how kooky."
Aparently, though, that rock is a landmark of the old days in which Fitchburg was still a settlement. Fitchburg used to be nothing more than rolling hills and mountain sides and here and there you can still find places that are still glimpses into the past.
Stories abound in Fitchburg about the "little girl" who haunts the rock and with as many people telling virtually the same version, it tends to lean toward the truth.
Legend has it that as the rock was being removed from the earth, it was realized that it was too big to be removed as a whole, therefore, dynamite was used to severe the egg in half. The large rock was removed from the ground and carted away. During transportation, it is said, that one half of the rock fell from the transport and crushed a little girl to death and has since then been haunted by the little girl's spirit.
Citizens tell of sightings of the little girl and at times can hear her cries for help as though she were still trapped beneath the stone. I, myself, have not witnessed the spirit, nor have heard anything unusual when passing the stone. Currently, I have not taken any pictures of the rock or the surrounding area. It is definately on my list of things to do and when I find the time, it will be done.
So, if you are driving down Main St. in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, keep your eyes open for the landmark in the middle of an intersection... keep your eyes peeled and your ears open, and maybe you will catch sight or sound, of the little girl.
