Nicky's "Marlin Magic"

It was a night full of upsets right from the very beginning, and when all was said and done, it was a surprising name who wound up with the most victories. Nicky Ostis won his first Halloween Foosball title, albeit in the doubles tournament, when he and his partner, Kyle shocked the world.  (In actuality however, its important to note that Nicky and Kyle were technically favored in each of their matches.  They entered the #4 seed, however, the #1 and #3 seed both fell in the first round, and the #2 seed lost in the other semi-final.)

In 1998, Nicky beat Wilson, Steve, and then Jim before eventually losing to the newcomer, Corey, in what was called his "Flutie Magic" run.   With Doug Flutie now a just backup for the San Diego-Arizona Chargers, his 2003 run could be dubbed "Marlin Magic" in honor of the surprising world champion Florida Marlins.

It was a surprise that Nick and Kyle even teamed up at all considering what transpired last year.  Nick and Kyle lost early in the 2002 Doubles Tournament and Nick placed all the blame on his partner's shoulders.  When the two later met in the singles tournament, Nicky appeared to have busted ten caps in his ass, however it has since been learned that he "missed."  In any event, the two teamed up for a third year and a row, surprising many HFT experts.

Nick and Kyle defeated the team of Shawn in the first round by a score of 5-2.  Shawn was given the grandfathered privilege to compete as a one man doubles team after doing the same thing last year.  Nick and Kyle later defeated the team of "Joey and Yao" (who had the single biggest upset of the night, when they defeated Steve and Corey) in the semi-finals.  They then moved on to face the equally surprising team of Kenny and Gina.

Nick and Kyle got off to an early lead but Kenny and Gina were able to eventually force OT and even get a game point situation, before Nick and Kyle mounted a late rally monkey and scored three consecutive goals to take home the title.

Nick's success didn't end there however.  For the seventh year in a row, Nicky won his first round match in the singles tournament, this time against his own namesake, Nick L.  Nicky has more victories in the round of 16 than any other Halloween Foosball competitor including the Big Four. However he has only been able to make it past the Elite 8 once, and that was in 1998. It marked the first time that two people with the same first name faced in the first round of the Halloween Foosball Tournament.  Nick defeated Nick 5-1 to move on to another second round match up with his brother, Steve.  After beating Steve in 1998, Nicky had lost three straight meetings to his brother in '99, '00, and '02.  Steve was quoted as saying "I'm sick of this match" after learning of his opponent.

Then in the second biggest shocker of the night, Nicky defeated his older brother by the count of 7-4.  Steve and the entire crowd was utterly stunned by this turn of events, and it marked the first time since '98 that the final four would not be Corey, Greg, Jim and Steve. Since this was the first semi-final match, each of the other 3 favorites were very concerned.

It appeared however, that Nicky's magical run would come to an end pretty quickly in the semi-finals.  Nicky had been 5-0 and a victory over Greg would have tied him with Corey in 2002 for the most wins in a single night (doubles and singles combined).  But in the early going it just didn't appear that was going to be the case.  Greg jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, before a pause for the final out of the World Series.  When Jorge Posada grounded out to the pitcher, Josh Beckett, the crowd roared in celebration.  They would immediately storm out of the house and burn a New York Yankees hat in the backyard as the game was suspended.  The celebration took a good 10-15 minutes before the semi-final match resumed.

Then in a scene straight out of a story book, Nicky scored five goals in a row following the break to somehow tie the game against Greg.  Fans were speculating that the long break was sort of a "Yankees' God Bless America" thing going on.  Or perhaps, Nicky was just inspired by the Marlins, his team on MVP Baseball 2003.  In any event, what looked to be a laugher victory for Greg turned into what was likely the best match of the entire evening.  Greg recovered and scored the all important 8th goal, and while Nicky would reach 8 goals himself, Greg won the race to ten and therefore advanced to a third straight finals appearance.

Still it took nothing away from the impressive night for Nicky, who once again shocked the world.
