Shifting in my chair, a sense of dread was forming in the pit of my stomach. I just couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
Letting out a shaky breath, I try to focus my attention back to the meeting. Looking up, I notice Philip giving me a puzzled glance.
Snap out of it, Danny. You just got this job, and you are not about to lose it. The meeting was almost over anyways. I promised Michelle that we would go to lunch.
The last couple of weeks had been wonderful. Michelle had stubbornly admitted that she needed my help. I was thrilled. We had decided to take this new found bond slowly. We both were actually aware of trying to separate the past from now. Sometimes, it was hard not to slip back into the past.
There were moments when it seemed like we had never stopped being married. Once in awhile, I had to remind myself that we were no longer husband and wife. Still, I was a bit afraid of stepping back into something more serious.
It was too early. I wanted to persue a relationship with Michelle but I was not sure that she was ready for that.
Out of the corner of my eye, I notice Mary, Philip's sectrary, slip into the room, and make her way over to Philip. My stomach tightens when I notice the look on Philip's face. Something was wrong.
Feeling Philip's eyes on me, I quickly make my excuses and run out of the board room. Stopping for a moment, Mary tells me that Michelle was rushed to the hospital. Rushing out into the hall, I push the down button to the elevator. Frustrated, I finally give up, and take the stairs.
Catching my breath, I finally make into my car, and speed towards the hospital. I pray that Michelle is okay. She had been doing so well. Every checkup, she had been to, the doctors had given her a clean bill of health. Her eyes still hurt and they were still monitoring her condition.
Things can't fall apart now. I can't lose Michelle now.
Bolting from the car, I run into the emergency room, and grab a nurse. She directed me to a small room. Taking a deep breath, I open the door, not knowing what to expect.
Michelle is sitting up in bed, talking to a nurse. She gives me a huge smile when she notices me. My breathing starts to return to normal.
"Danny."
"Michelle." I say breathlessly
I wait for the nurse to leave before I make my way over to the bed. Gently, I sit down on the edge of the bed. "Baby, you had me so worried. I thought that something really horrible happened to you."
Michelle gives me a small smile, and her hand strokes my cheek. "I'm sorry, Danny. I didn't mean to worry you. I was feeling sick, and Bill had insisted that I come to the hospital. Nothing is wrong, you don't have to worry."
"I always worry about you. I say lovingly
I notice tears starting to form in her eyes. I pull her closer to me, so my chin is resting on her shoulder. "You have been so good to me, Danny. Sometimes, I don't think that I deserve you.."
I pull away, surprised. "Don't say that, Michelle. You deserve so much more than I could give you. "
"No, Danny. You have been so good to me. I am not sure what to do with it sometimes."
I push away strands of hair on her forehead. I let out a small chuckle. "You just need to be willing to accept that you need help. I know that is hard for you."
Michelle shoots me a embarrassed smile. "I'm trying. I really am."
"I know you are, and I admire you for that." I say admiringly. "Michelle, I wanted to ask you something."
"About what?"
"It is about us."
I notice that Michelle shifts uneasily in the bed. "Michelle, I didn't mean to scare you.."
"No, I am just surprised, Danny. I didn't think that you were ready…"
"I am ready. Michelle, I want to take care of you." I say admantly
"Danny, you are already taking care of me."
I shake my head. I need to make her understand. "No, Michelle. I want to be the one who is responsible for you. I want to be the person who takes care of you." I say passionately
"Danny, I.."
"I want to be there for you. I want you in my life. We deserve this second chance, and I promise not to rush you into anything that you aren't ready for but I want to take care of you."
Gently, I brush away the tears on Michelle's cheeks. Giving her a hestiant smile, I lean in closer to her, and give her a gentle kiss.
In a teary voice, Michelle mumbles, "I am finally where I belong. I am home."
"I am home."
*Somehow ever since I've been around you
Can't go back to being on my own
Can't help feeling darling since I've found you
That I've found my home
That I'm finally home
I said I'd never let nobody get too close to me darling
I said I needed, needed to be free
Asked me to, I will give my world to you baby
I need you now
Ask me to and I'll do anything for you baby, for you baby*
