King Arthur
filled his Round Table with the best knights in all
the world. But for many years, one seat
remained empty. No one could sit on it and live,
which is why it was called the "Siege
Perilous" or seat of danger. Merlin
prophesied that when a knight came to claim the Siege
Perilous, the days of the Round table would be
drawing to their close.
One day a
young knight clad in red armour appeared at court,
without weapons. He bowed to King Arthur,
walked straight to the Siege Perilous, and sat
down. The knights gasped. But behind the young
man appeared in letters of gold, "Galahad, the
High Prince."
"Welcome,"
said King Arthur. "Please tell us who you
are."
"I am
Sir Galahad, and my mother Elaine, is the daughter of
King Pelles, the Maimed King."
"I have
heard of King Pelles, who lies crippled at the castle
of Carbonek. But I did not know he had a
grandson. And yet, sir Galahad, I feel I know
you. You look like Sir Lancelot as a young
man."
"This
is not surprising," said Lancelot, "For he
is my son."
