Yosuke Date was a minor member of the Date family in northern Aonatsu. He met Ilsoun Lanivret, a young woman from Cailleach, and they fell in love. Neither of their families approved of the match, so they ran away, forsaking all ties to their clans, and made a new life for themselves in the Free Cities. They finally settled in Takerin, an open port full of mixed families, and started their family together. Yosuke was talented with numbers and became a successful merchant. The Takerin Dates quickly became a prominent family.

Their eldest child, Anshin, had Yosuke's mercantile cunning. She helped her father with the business and also aided her mother in the home. Anshin hated being idle from her youngest days. The second, Kouyou, was extremely intellegent but not as wise. He seemed destined to grow up to be an absent-minded professor, and indeed he did. Arashi was their second daughter, who was smart but never applied herself. She changed her mind constantly about what she wanted to do with her life. Celdeen was the first to receive a Cailleach name, much to Yosuke's dismay. He called her Kitsune, a reference to her fox-like features. The youngest was Gwydion, who was raised by Yosuke and Anshin after Ilsoun's death in childbed. He was doted on by the whole family, and outrageously spoiled until he rebelled after secondary school and moved away.

After Yosuke's death, Anshin and her husband Yota Huyuhana took over the business and home, all the others having moved out long before. Yota is largely responsible for the business, as Anshin has gotten lazier over the years. She views this as a well-deserved rest after raising their five children. Emira, the eldest, married her high school sweetheart and moved merely down the street. Her first daughter is. Arisu took after her parents and went into business, imports mostly. She recently married her business partner, Tora Enumoto. Masao became an accountant after a stint at the Academy. Koichi is still attending classes there, as is Isshin. Koichi tries to be independant and moved into the student housing instead of staying at home. He takes after his uncle Kouyou in his love of history, but Koichi's head is on straighter. Isshin still lives with his parents, and prefers more hands-on studies than accounting or history. He is currently studying tailoring, after deciding that woodworking wasn't for him.

Kouyou did not marry until after he received his degree and began working at the Academy. Pearl Dansewin was the only reason he was able to pass his cooking class. Kouyou is not allowed near the stove in her house. Their three children are easily the most volatile of the Date children- most of the Date siblings get along, but putting these three near each other at any time is liable to result in bloodshed. Hikaru is the eldest, and firmly believes in his authority as such. He once aspired to mercenary work, until told by Masao that accounting pays more and is less dangerous. Kaoru, the middle child, is easily the prettiest of the three, which Takara resents. Kaoru's passion is music, although he is completely infatuated with Millena Rosencraft as well. He also dabbles in karate and kenjutsu, mostly to protect himself from Hikaru. The youngest is Takara, whom Pearl admits she spoiled a bit, Takara being her only girl. However, Takara seems to hate her older brothers just for existing. She is the only one of the three still in school.

Arashi had finally settled into being a priestess of Erendis when she just up and left. Her father and Anshin received periodic letters, in which Arashi told them of her son. She never mentioned a father, however. Taski was ridiculously spoiled beyond anything Arashi's siblings could do. Then, all contact with the pair stopped. Taski later found the Takerin Dates, and revealed that Arashi had died in an attack on their town when he was nine. He did not remember he had other family. While the hallmark of the Dates is their intellegence, Taski is a much simpler person, retaining many characteristics of the spoiled little boy he once was. The family blames his unknown father for causing the lack of Date intellegence in Taski.

Celdeen had always been fond of Cailleach, so it was no surprise when she came home from vacation with a Cailleach boyfriend. What surprised them was when it worked out, and Celdeen and Bran married. Their only child, Elan, is currently fourteen and chafing at her parents restrictions. She yearns for the privileges her older cousins have already earned. While not as spoiled as Taski was, Elan enjoys a much freer rein than any of Anshin's children ever had.

Gwydion moved out of Takerin after secondary school. He was a Monster Hunter for a short time, but quit after a bad encounter with a rabid yeti. Afterwards, he took over a Hunter's Guild, which seems to be profitable for him. Like Koichi, he yearns to be independant, but the conception of his son effectively stopped that. His experience has made Koichi very wary of his girlfriend. Gwydion married his longtime girlfriend and son's mother, Ridia Lioth, after much pressure from her family, and they are expecting their second child this winter.

Kyra is the only great-grandchild of Yosuke and Ilsoun so far. She is an energetic schoolgirl who is much more active than the rest of the family. She is the only one so far to take up a sport that doesn't involve beating someone up. Karate and different types of swordplay are favored among the younger Dates; the older ones favor money-counting and other desk activities. Kyra recently joined the girls junior basketball team, and plans to take up softball in the spring.
