Mayville secured its fourth conference victory and sixth overall against one loss Friday night at Markesan with a 34-13 win over the Hornets. The Cardinal defense played especially well in turning Markesan miscues into Mayville scoring plays.

The first period resembled previous Cardinal openings in the fact that they did not score but also held their opponent scoreless. All season the Cardinals have scored only nine points in the first quarter, compared to six for their opposition.

Toward the middle of the second period, John Preston reached paydirt on a 4-yard run to start the scoring. The PAT attempt by Perrie Apfelbeck was wide left, so the score remained 6-0 through the half.

The Hornets struck first in the third period on a two-yard plunge by Dammrow. The PAT gave Markesan a7-6 lead with just under 9 minutes to play.

But the next ten minutes belonged to Mayville's offense and a big defensive play. With 6:32 remaining in the third, senior quarterback Craig Walters hit junior receiver Tim Blair in perfect stride for a 40-yard touchdown strike. Apfelbeck converted on the extra point to put Mayville on top, 13-7.

Not long after, Apfelbeck scored on a 50-yard run, a misdirection play that easily fooled the defenders. Perrie again converted to push the lead up, 20-7.

Soon into the start of the fourth period, the Hornets were able to push the ball down to the Mayville 10-yard line. On second down, the ball carrier turned the corner at the 5-yard line and coughed the ball right into Blair's hands who raced 95 yards for the score. This was Tim's fourth takeaway of the season, along with three interceptions. With Apfelbeck's PAT successful, the Cardinals maintained a 27-7 lead with 11:23 remaining in the game.

Apfelbeck, who again had an excellent game, was not finished yet. With 8:29 remaining, he was again called upon to run the same play which earlier went for 50 yards. This time he made good for 32 yards and a touchdown. It was the same play with Preston making the fake, and Apfelbeck practically walking into the end zone with the ball. He again booted the extra point to boost his point performance to 16 for the evening.

Markesan managed one more late score on a pass to Rich Slate, good for 87 yards. After the missed extra point, and time expiring, the final score was Mayville 34, Markesan 13.

Quarterback Craig Walters played one of his season's best games, completing 6 of 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Tim Blair caught two passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. Perrie Apfelbeck rushed just ten times for 127 yards and two touchdowns. John Preston had 18 carries for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Game officials called 25 penalties, of which 11 belonged to Mayville for 118 yards, and 14 to Markesan for 128 yards.
