Mayville rebounds, whips Wautoma

Mayville rebounded well from a 41-21 lost to Ripon last week to beat Wautoma, 50-20, in an East Central Flyway Lakes Division game Friday in Wautoma. Wautoma gave Ripon one of the best games the undefeated Tigers had all season, so Mayville certainly wasn’t going into the game taking the Hornets lightly.

It showed.

Mayville held the Hornets to 205 total yards, while piling up 492 of its own.

“We really kicked it into gear,” Mayville coach Steve Brickson said. “Nick Bloch did an outstanding job. He’s such a tough runner to stop. He made everything open up for us tonight.

“We ran inside, outside, and connected on short passes.”

Bloch broke the 1,000-yard barrier for the season with 273 yards on 26 carries.

The senior fullback also scored three touchdowns including the Cardinals’ first score on a 58-yard run.

The Cardinals (3-2, 5-2) had a 37-20 lead going into the fourth quarter and then got in the end zone for two scores. Bloch’s 3-yard run at 5:20 to ended the game’s scoring.

Quarterback Bryan Gentz threw a touchdown reception to Adam Haas, a 16-yarder at 9:47 in the fourth quarter, and scored two touchdowns himself in the second quarter on runs of 1- and 2-yards. Gentz went 11 of 14 passing and tallied 133 yards through the air to complement Bloch’s ground game. Kicker Adam Runge went 5-for-6 on extra-point kicks and nailed a 23-yard field goal midway through the first quarter.

With all of that offense for the Cardinals and Brickson wanted to make sure and point out the play of his defensive unit.

“I was really pleased with our secondary,” he said. “We were worried at the beginning of the year and Wautoma threw more than we thought.”
