RIPON - Two weeks has made all the difference in the world for Mayville sopohomore quarterback Matt Haass.
Two weeks after getting pulled at halftime of a loss at Waupun, he completed 14 of 18 passes for 219 yards to rally the Cardinals, 35-24, over top-ranked Ripon Friday night. His 52-yard scoring strike to Ben Vorlob proved to be the game-winner in the ECFC Lakes showdown.
Mayville's upset created a four-way logjam atop the Lakes. The Cardinals 4-3, 3-1 Lakes) finish with home games against Wautoma and Omro.
"This was a great game by our quarterback," Mayville coach Steve Brickson said. "He showed the leadership skills I knew he had and he looked real comfortable."
Mayville trailed the Tigers (6-1, 3-1), 6-0, after a quarter but took the lead on Sean Schuelke's 5-yard run and a 10-yard TD pass from Haass to his older brother Andrew. Ripon scored with a minute left in the half but missed the trying conversion pass.
"It was nice going into halftime with lead," Brickson said. "They scored late but we don't quit.
"In the past we've had a quarter here and a quarter there but we didn't do that tonight."
Matt Haass scored on a 1-yard sneak to give Mayville a 21-12 lead but Ripon got a pair of TD runs for a 24-21 lead. Haass then found Vorlob to reclaim the lead before Eric Schwartzmiller sealed the game.
He picked off a pass and returned in 45 yards as the Tigers misfired on all 10 pass attempts, with two intercepted. Schuelke nailed the coffin with a 2-yard TD run.
"Eric's interception was a big, big momentum changer," Brickson said. "That was huge. Eric's solid on defense and he's probably the best overall athlete we have."
Andrew Haass finished with 78 yards on seven catches and Mitch Weyer picked off a pass for the Cardinals. Zach Kuhn set up another score for the Cards with a fumble recovery.
