The breaks finally fell Mayville’s way in Friday’s 27-14 victory over Winneconne in an East Central Flyway Lakes Division football game on Friday. The Cardinals outgained Winneconne in total yards, 475-96, but found themselves trailing the Wolves 14-7 at the half.

That’s when things began breaking right for Mayville. Ben Vorlob had a 48-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Eric Schwartzmiller added a 25-yard touchdown reception and Matt Haass scored on a 1-yard plunge as the Cardinals rallied for the win.

“All season long it seems like the breaks that do occur just don’t go our way,” Mayville coach Steve Brickson said.

“We had (eight penalties for 113 yards), which is uncharacteristic for us. “I didn’t yell at the kids during halftime. I told them we’re finally back home after being on the road for four games. I kept it positive. I told the 15 seniors on the team that this (game) is on you guys right now. It was kind of a gut check and they came through.”

Haass had the Cardinals up 7-0 on a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but Winneconne’s Jeff Vandervelden scored on a 67-yard touchdown pass and added a 89-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter to put the Wolves on top. Vorlob had 188 yards on 17 carries to lead the Cardinals, who pounded out 381 yards on 69 carries. Sean Schuelke added 18 carries and 129 yards, while Haass finished with 94 yards passing on 8 of 12 attempts.

Mayville’s defense limited the Wolves to 17 yards rushing on 24 attempts, as Winneconne could only muster two first downs.

“Our defense is winning games for us right now,” Brickson said. “In the games we’ve won, they’ve come up big. Our offense has the potential to score 35-to-40 points, but they haven’t reached that level yet. “The true test comes next week (against Ripon). We’ll see if we can do to them what we did with Berlin and Winneconne, which is shut down the run. We’re going to have to do it to give us a chance to win.”
