2012 Season Preview
In 2012, the WIAA has turned the clock back to 1969! Well, sort of...
The eight-week schedule, a temporary situation exclusive to this year, is reminiscent of the days of the Northern Little Ten, with ony a few things missing for the Mayville Cardinals - all if its opponents from that bygone era. Even Horicon and the Marsh Bowl has been jettisoned due to conference retinkering.
The 2012 Cards open the season with their only non-conference tilt hosting the Falcons of Sheboygan Falls High. The teams last met in the 1999 WIAA playoffs, with the Falcons prevailing. Much has changed in both camps since those days. All six previous meeting were in the playoffs and featured the match up of two hall of fame coaches in Mayville's Alex Hilber and Falls' Dan Juedes. This is the first time Mayville will host the Falcons and hope to improve on the 2-4 head-to-head record.
Week 2 throws the Cardinals into the conference schedule, this year an eight-team race, when they host the Laconia Spartans. Trying to snap a two-game losing streaking against the the Spartans, Mayville hopes to start out right and improve their impressive 21-4 record vs. Laconia.
On Septemner 7th, the Cardinals will travel to conference power Omro. The Foxes have battled with Springs for the conference title in the past two seasons. Omro holds a three-agme winning streak on the Cardinals.
Mayville will host Lomira, now our closest rival, on September 14th. The Mayville-Lomira game has been played 30 times since 1980 with the Cardinals dominating, 25-5. At the conclusion of this game, Lomira will be our #6 all-time rival.
Saturday night lights on September 22nd, when the Cards travel to KML in Jackson to try to snap the two-game losing streak against the Chargers.
On September 28th, Mayville hosts Winnebago Lutheran. The Vikings now hold a 4-2 edge in the series, beating Mayville in each of the last 4 years.
Another Saturday night feature on October 6th, when the Cards travel to meet the always-ready Ledgers of St. Mary's Springs. Bob Hyland's Ledgers are defending conference champs, coming off a 14-0 state championship run in 2011. Springs has a knack for reloading talent and winning games for Hyland, the winningest head coach in Wisconsin football history. No doubt that this game will have conference title implications. Springs has a 9-7 edge in the all-time series.
The eight-game schedule comes to a close ridiculous early on October 12th when Mayville plays host to North Fond du Lac. The Orioles are the ony opponent on this year's slate that lost to Mayville in 2011. Mayville leads the series, first played in the 1920's, 24-4.
Horicon was the other victim in the 2-7 season in 2011, Mark Pankow's first season. The Cardinals are looking to improve, of course, and get back into the top half of the conference standings and put a game on the schedule after mid-October. Certainly not contenders for the title, yet, a competitive team can achieve a 4-4 record in this league.
With the top six all-time opponents - Horicon (84 games), Ripon (70), Waupun (61), Berlin (44), Columbus (7) and Beaver Dam (1)- off the schedule and not returning any time soon, Lomira and North Fond du Lac will move up the ladder of most-played opponents.
