With the wife gone for the day and the baby slleping longer than normal, I wanted to go out and see if the life long misdeeds and total destruction of the monetary structure of ML baseball, Mr George Steinbrenner, had truely crept into the values and foundation of the GDFBL.
The 2003 season saw 116 trades, and the fires of injustice burned in every owners heart as each passed. Mr. Steinbrenner was the poster boy for the injustices, as Glen and Gary made trades after trades, piling on the dollars like an Enron Exec lining his pockets. Was this the real issue??? Looking more closely at the each trade this season, ONLY 21 trades were made that involved Major league talent (or minor leaguers who at the time were eligible for trading under our new system.)

Other than the now famous Lowe/Presto deal, it is hard to find another trade that even remotely would cause a raucous throughout the league.
Maybe the problem wasn't the George Steinbrenner types, who are the easy targets. The real problem was the small market philosophy and build for tomorrow rather than today.
Were Gary and Glenn strrong teams coming into the season? Yes!
Were they made stronger because teams were willing to give up top value talent for two or three years down the road? Absolutley!
We have gotten rid of trading Minor leaguers during the season. If a team is on the verge of winning the league and has a $2 Wells and $4 Gagne, and is looking for a $40 dollar VLAD up for a $5 dollar raise the upcoming year, is this a unjust trade? Not at all!
A cap might just prevent this from happening.
