Ken Zwiebel's Behind the Scenes with David Grindley

Pearl Harbor Day, 1976. 35 years to the day after the December 7th attack that brought the US into WWII. The Wolverines were #1 in college basketball. Elvis was in concert in Vegas. Argentinean supermodel Martina Klein was born. But none of those events will go down in infamy for GMDS as much as the birth of our own David Grindley.

Now, 27 years later, Grindley is hard at work producing the next show for the cable network that he works for, the Outdoor Life Network. David is a very self-motivated guy who on the one hand admits that he would prefer to work for OLN than anyone else and on the other dreams up ways to quit his job. He schedules production staff, facilities and just “makes it happen” for the various shows on OLN.

David has coordinated such events as the Tour de France, skiing, and professional bull riding. There is a semi-substantiated rumor that David knows the REAL truth behind the break-up of Lance Armstrong and his wife (David swears that the claims of marital infidelity are only partially true). David’s coverage reaches just about every type of sporting event that people do outside, as he says, “except sex”. (ed. note – David, it IS possible to have sex outside… and frequently it IS a sport, so you should start filming that, too).

It is a wonder that the OLN has yet to cover the Kimo-over-the-line-beach-tournament. We are anxiously awaiting word on whether this will happen in 2004.

David lives in Ansonia, Connecticut and is single. He, contrary to some opinions, is “straight” and is seeing someone now (sorry to disappoint you, -name deleted-, if you are still reading this message board). And who could resist this guy with his favorite pastimes – long walks on the beach and reading poetry?

Little known fact about David – he has a twin sister. An even lesser-known fact – David and his sister were mixed up at birth and not until David turned 18 did he realize that he was actually the boy part of the dynamic duo. David’s sister is a teacher.

Coming out of Pace University (quick, what is Pace’s nickname… anyone? Anyone? THE SETTERS! What kind of nickname is THAT?), David decided that a career in athletics just was not in the cards. Yet his competitive nature and love of sports would not subside… and here he is, formulating strategies for victory in GMDS. Grindley admits that championship in 2004 is hardly assured, but he would bet the house on 2005. He was at the epicenter of many of the more controversial trades in 2003, but Grindley holds-fast to his team-building philosophy. David welcomes his self-appointed duty as the fastest-news-reporter on trades and transactions in MLB and is kind enough to share this insider information with us just AFTER he has finished picking up the bench player-turned starter!!! ;-)

A personal note – Instant Messaging with Grindley is always fun. There is never a doubt that I will learn something new about his opinion on players or roto-strategy. Those who have not had the opportunity, David is always open for a chat.
