Mollie Lee Mullis Self (Called "Ma" by all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren) said she could remember her family having parties at their home when she was a little girl; and her older sisters, Dutch, Betsy and Babe would dance. I always imagined a scene straight out of "Gone With The Wind" when she told this story.
Ma used to sing "School days, school days,
Dear old golden rule days.
'Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic,
Taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick."
She also liked to recite a poem, "There was a crooked man and he walked a crooked mile, He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse. And they all lived together in a little crooked house."
Ma told me she had a best friend when she was in school. They were inseparable, and the teacher called them the "Gold Dust Twins".
Mollie Lee also said that she met her husband, Clint, when he was on his way to see another girl. When asked if she flirted with him, she said, "I reckon I did."
MOLLIE LEE MULLIS married
CHARLES CLINTON "Clint" SELF
and they had ten children.
Charles Clinton "Clint" Self b. 7/12/1890 d. 10/27/1961 moved to Dodge County from Twiggs County, Georgia, married Mollie Lee Mullis b. 8/11/1897 d. 3/5/1981.
Times were hard. Mollie Lee said that she used to go into town and stand on the street and sell her homemade butter.
Mollie Lee told me that John D. was named after John D. Rocketfeller. She said that she wrote Mr. Rocketfeller a letter to let him know that a baby down in Georgia had been named after him. She thought that he might send a gift, maybe money, to the baby, but that never happened.
Clint died at the age of 71.
Mollie Lee said that on the morning Clint died, he got out of bed and came into the kitchen where she was baking biscuits for breakfast. He was picking at her and she playfully threw flour at him and he left the room. In a few minutes he came back and was very serious. He kissed her on the cheek and said solemnly, "This is the last time." Then he left the kitchen and went back to bed. When she went to wake him up she found him dead. He had died peacefully in his sleep. She always believed Clint had a premonition that he was going to die that day because it was as if he had kissed her goodbye.
Mollie Lee died at the age of 84. She had a stroke. The stroke caused her to fall and break her hip.
