The Old Ways

To the people the old ways are sacred. And to many nations they are all but lost now. It is my hope that this will not happen. That all Indians will wake up and see that it is our time to stand strong. It is our time to teach and to keep our traditions alive before they are lost forever. The ancient ones are crying out to us for help! We must do all we can to preserve these old ways as they have been taught to us for hundreds of years.
And I also must speak on this issue for a minute. Our traditions and sacred ceremonies are not to be mixed with other religions and ways. I don't think that a minister would appreciate it if I came into his church and started praying with my chanupa. And our elders do not think it is honorable when they see our sacred items being used in a way that they were not meant to be used. Respect our ways and traditions and we will always respect yours. This is the start of the peace that can come between many different peoples. I don't feel that anyone is right or wrong on what there path is..it's just your path. Walk it..Walk it proud! But never insist that your way is the only way or the right way. That is for the creator to chose not for people to do.
I will be adding many different opinions about the old ways here and I appreciate any input that you may have. Many prayers and blessings to all!

Teach your children the old ways

Children were encouraged to develop strict discipline and a high regard for sharing. When a girl picked her first berries and dug her first roots, they were given away to an elder so she would share her future success. When a child carried water for the home, an elder would give compliments, pretending to taste meat in water carried by a boy or berries in that of a girl. The child was encouraged not to be lazy and to grow straight like a sapling.
