Several regions in Morocco still suffer from illiteracy in the 21st century. However, the causes of the phenomenon are known, and the solutions are possible.
It is unusual that the rural areas are still underdeveloped, and illiteracy is prevailing among the population. This is due to the absence of infrastructure in addition of course to the great shortage in schools and teachers. This situation creates joblessness and poverty within these communities. Because of ignorance and lack of quality education, the parents prevent their children from attending school especially girls. As the latter have little or no education and experience, they are pushed to get married at an early age. Consequently, the majority of them get repudiated sooner after marriage. As for the boys, they leave for big cities to look for jobs, and because they are illiterate, they do dirty jobs and they are mostly underpaid. They become victims of exploitation and violence. They may even become drug dealers or addicts which led them to jail.
Nonetheless, practical solutions to alleviate illiteracy and poverty in these regions are urgently needed. Firstly, the government should give a little more importance to these remote places through paving roads, building bridges, supplying running water and electricity. Secondly, the role of associations in this case seems crucial because it can help these poor people by setting up schools of proximity besides providing the material necessary for this goal like offering the learners buses, school books, clothes and food among other vital things. Finally, it’s obligatory to organize conferences to sensitize parents as well as their children of the importance of education in life, and that school is the only way for the betterment of their existence.
In brief, Illiteracy in the 21st century is actually not normal. Therefore, we need some responsible people with good intentions and a lot of courage, practical initiatives and immense sacrifice to get rid of this shameful phenomenon of illiteracy.
