Exerpt From Darkwater: The Shadow of Years

This page contains a few exerpts from the book Darkwater:Voices from Within the Veil. I chose parts of this book because much like how Souls of Balck Folk changed peoples lives because it addressed all the issues noone was willing to listen to, Sarkwater spoke about his life, about growing up, and about his family on a personal level. We "grow" up with him in this book and hear the respect that he has for his family and the impact that they had on his life as well. We learn how he holds Great Barrington in his heart and the beauty that it has to him and on his life.

"I was born by a golden river and in the shadow of two great hills, five years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The house was qaint, with clapboards running up and down, neatly trimmed, and there were five rooms, a tiny porch, a rosy front yard, and unbelievably delicious strawberries in the rear. A SOuth Carolinian, lately come to the Berkshire Hills, owned all this--tall, thin, and black, with golden earrings, and given to religious trances. We were his transcient tenants for the time."

"From the age of five until i was sixteen i went to school on the same grounds,--down a lane, into a widened yard, with a big choke-cherry tree and two buildings, wood and brick. Here i got acquainted with my world, and soon had my criterions of judgement."
