History

The name means Principality - the land of a Vojvod. An area of Serbia in Yugoslavia which was designated by Josip Tito as an Autonomous Province because it is inhabited partly by non Serbs, including Hungarians and Romanians. The Serbian government of Milosovic revoked the autonomy, as also of Kosovo. This seemed likely to cause disturbance. However, the region has remained peaceful.

This land has belonged to Hungary in the past. A more nationalist government than there is at present might demand that parts of it be returned to Hungary, especially now that Yugoslavia has divided into its component parts.

By now (2005) the danger to this area seems to have passed.
