Pronunciamiento

The announcement by the military officer leading an attack on the government in a golpe or coup d'etat in a Spanish speaking country. An example is the revolt of the army against the Spanish Republic in 1936, preceding the civil war and the establishing of the Franco regime. In the former Spanish Empire in the Americas such events have been frequent in the couple of centuries since independence. However, these events are less common now.

The custom may be derived from the situation in the Roman Empire where the emperors were frequently made by the army.
