| The Mid Atlantic ridge, where the earth's
interior wells up as the ocean spreads, occasionally reaches
the surface to form, mostly volcanic, islands. Most of the Islands were controlled first by the Portuguese, who discovered them, and later by the British during their control of the world's oceans. The four British islands will doubtless be the last territories of the British Empire. In the North Atlantic Iceland is also sited on the Ridge. |
