Also known as Desolation island. A small French territory in the southern ocean. Probably visited by the Portuguese in the 16th century.

Formerly a seal hunting and whaling station it is now a scientific base. No doubt, as with Britain and the Falklands, it is a fall back for possible claims to Antarctica itself.

It is the furthest land from a continent. Regular population about 90.
