How Does Windows Handle Faxing?

Most dial-up modems also have the ability to send and receive faxes. You need to have a phone line connected to the modem and a fax client program installed on your computer. The client program allows you to compose, read, and archive faxes in the same way that an e-mail client handles e-mail.

The Windows XP CD-ROM contains a fax client program, Fax Console, but it isn't automatically installed. You may need to install it from the CD-ROM. Once it is installed, you need to configure it to work with your modem or whatever other fax device you have connected to your computer.

Another way to deal with faxes via your computer is to use an Internet-based fax service, like eFax (http://www.efax.com) or jConnect (http://www.j2.com). Both services will receive faxes for you and e-mail them to you at no charge, or allow you to send faxes from your computer for a monthly fee.
