Uninstalling Windows XP

If you upgraded to Windows XP from a previous version of Windows, the Setup Wizard may have backed up your current operating system. (The backup files are named Backup.cab and Boot.cab and are stored in C:\Undo, assuming that Windows is stored on C.) If so, you can uninstall Windows XP and return to that operating system. Be sure to make a backup of your data files before uninstalling Windows XP.

note If you have changed your partitions or drives since installing Windows XP, you usually can't uninstall it.

To uninstall Windows XP, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.
  2. If Windows XP Uninstall appears in the Currently Installed Programs, you can uninstall it.
  3. Click Windows XP Uninstall. Additional information appears.
  4. Click the Change/Remove button. You see the Uninstall Windows XP dialog box.
  5. Choose Uninstall Windows XP and click Continue.
  6. Follow the directions on the screen. When the uninstall process is finished, your computer restarts and runs your previous operating system.

Uninstalling Windows doesn't delete your data files. However, any programs that you installed after you installed Windows XP probably won't work. To fix this, just install them again. If you created any documents or files, they may still be stored in C:\Documents And Settings\username\.
