The 6th scale degree is added later, making phrases like
"5Stand 6upper 5stand 3middle 1sit".
The songs are to be sung with Da-di as well. White half and whole notes 5 and 1 are 'Da', black quarter notes 3 and 6 are 'di'. Thus
"5Stand 6upper 5stand 3middle 1sit"
is also sung "5Da 6di-di 5Da 3di-di 1Da".
The eighth scale degree is added toward the end of the book, making
"8High 6upper 5stand 3middle 1sit".
The children also learn to recognize Da-di patterns in "skipping time", that is, 3/4 time felt in one. They follow the music by slapping for each 'box' (measure) that begins with a note, and clapping for each 'box' that begins with a rest. Some songs have words included, such as "Skipping Along":
"3Skipping a-5long, 3sing-ing a 1song,
5My 3oh 5my 3oh 5my!
3Skipping a-5long, 3it wont be 1long,
5My 3oh 5my 3oh 1my!
