Welcome to Muirhouses Farm

Mandella

In 1928 Angus McTaggart of Avonvoggie, Islay took his stud ewes to an already established flock, owned by Sir Robert McKenzie of Edenbarnet, dating back to pre 1900.

Since then Muirhouses policy has always been “FEMALES FIRST” - Character milky ewes with good mouths, balance, and a leg in each corner. This has never changed.

After the DUCHESS won the RHAS in 1968 came the “golden years” of the 70’s, with females like FLAIR, COUNTRY GIRL, SUGAR PUFF, CLEOPATRA, MARDI, SILVER LADY, MANNEQUIN, DANCING QUEEN, BRIGHT EYES, THE GASS EWE (off gass loan) 8 RHAS female championships. The flock had 4 supreme and one interbreed champion.

Muirhouses was not built on high cost tups – just sound tups from good blood lines. The strength of Muirhouses always came from good home-bred sires off the best female lines. This is borne out by their breeding ability. Muirhouses tups regularly bred well in excess of their cost – an example being £1000 to Larg, whose first two shearlings made £9000 and £7500.

Muirhouses breeding policy has never been one of a “Quick fix” to keep up with the “In thing” i.e. Tups have not been bought carrying a fundamental fault in order to buy a particular trait. The aim has simply been to breed good sheep. The influence of GOSLAND, TROLOSS and CONNACHAN directly or indirectly has been very strong over the last 40 years.

The depth of breeding in Muirhouses sheep should never be overlooked.
