Sergeant Bernard A. Lovell was never married. He enlisted in the United States Army on July 1, 1915 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Coast Artillery) before the United States entered the war and received basic training at Fort Scriven, Georgia and was placed in charge of a detachment of Signal Corpsmen. It was while serving in the Signal Corps that he was ordered abroad. He lost his life during the World War on October 6, 1918, when the British ship "Ottranto" with American troops aboard was sunk in a collision with another steamship off the coast of Scotland killing 431 men.
