According to our family legend, Henderson, and his brothers Redding and Jacob, are supposed to have been political rebels surnamed "Wilson" who fled Ireland during the Irish Union Rebellion in the 1790s. Ostensibly, they went to Holland, where they changed their name to "Vandergriff," then migrated to the U. S. One brother went to Round Rock, Texas; one went to Little Rock, AR; Henderson went to Rock Town, MO, which later became Iberia (Miller Co.).
Given the recent data I have acquired, this seems a pure folktale.
Missouri Marriages, 1766-1983 spells his name "Bandergriph"; Roots Web's Missouri Marriages to 1850 spells it "Bandergrish." I think this latter spelling is the one that's on the actual marriage certificate.

"He died in cold weather (fall or winter0)of a neglected hernia. Someone found him in an old house, unfed, cold, and unwashed and just about dead with gangrene. He was taken to a hospital but was too far gone for the medicines of that day to save him. That must have been around 1922 or 23 [actually 1921]. He apparently was not very good to his family and most of the kids had little to do with him. I saw one picture of him and he must have lookd much like my dad and some of the others." Stella had a daughter, Maxine, who had two girls -- Mary Lou and Donna Sue. Mary Lou was probably born in 1943 or so. Donna Sue was a couple of years younger. There may have been a third child, but I've lost track.

Our family stories say she was Henderson's daughter. However, the professional genealogists think that it is more likely that she was his wife and that she had a son, Isaac, by someone else -- perhaps another husband. The story in the family is that Kate became pregnant out of wedlock and would never name the father, though he apparently lived in Kentucky and she often went there to visit him. This story says that she gave their child the surname "Vandergriff" and she and her father, Henderson, raised him.
More recent information suggests that perhaps Kate was actually Kate Wilson and Henderson's second wife rather than his daughter. In this scenario, Isaac is either his son or his stepson rather than his grandson. This latter story is based on some information sent to me by genealogist Meg Gentges and corroborated by a couple of other genealogists and a copy of a newspaper listing of Osage Co., marriages in 1848.
The 1850 census notes that Kate's birth name was Wilson.
