Pulau Pangkor, Perak. Visited on 22nd August 2004.

PULAU PANGKOR (cont.)

Places To Stay

Pasir Bogak is the most developed beach, consisting of a string of mid-range hotels, a few restaurants and not much else, and while it's not the Costa Brava, it does get crowded. Teluk Nipah, probably the best beach on the island, is in transition from a small kampung to another Pasir Bogak as few mid-range hotels spring up around the local guesthouses. The only other development on Pangkor are mega-resorts on lsolated beaches.

Rates at most places vary between peak (weekends and holidays) and off peak seasons.

Teluk Nipah

The street at the southern end of Teluk Nipah has an increasing number of places to stay. The unbeatable Hornbill Beach Resort (05 685 2005) has charming hosts who offer high standards of accommodation and service. Attractive air-con rooms, the best in Teluk Nipah, face the beach or the jungle behind and cost RM120, including breakfast.

Dia orang yg silap cakap... Dan @dganum terpecahkan penutup tangki flush mereka kerana air paip tak berhenti-henti mengalir.

Kami tiba pada 21hb Ogos 2004, hari Sabtu, jam 8.00 malam. Dan kami pulang pada keesokkannya jam 11.30 pagi.

Pasir Bogak

Pasir Bogak The rest of Pangkor's accommodation possibilities are grouped at each end of the beach at Pasir Bogak, where there is a mixture of top end and cheaper places to stay. The atmosphere is lacking compared to Teluk Nipah, however, and fewer overseas travellers stay here. It's geared more to Malaysians on holiday.

Pulau Pangkor Laut

Pulau Pangkor Laut, dubbed 'Fantasy Island' and opposite Pasir Bogak, is totally in the grasp of the Pangkor Laut Resort. It is certainly exclusive and does its best to shun locals, day-trippers and other riff-raff. There are tennis courts, a small swimming pool, two restaurants, a disco and three or four private beaches around the island, including the picturesque Emerald Bay on the western side. Water sports equipment can be rented.

Places To Eat

Teluk Nipah. Teluk Nipah has some basic food stalls at the beach and a couple of restaurants.

@dganum sekeluarga makan malam di Warung Mak Tam. Very poor service, walaupun kami memesan nasi goreng cina, mee goreng dan air sirap je. Mak Tam kelam kabut siot!

Pasir Bogak. All the hotels have restaurants, and there are a few other places to eat.

Pangkor Town. Pangkor town has a proliferation of cheap coffee shops, some of which serve excellent seafood.

Getting There & Away

Air Berjaya Air (05 685 5828) has flights almost every day between KL's Subang airport and Pangkor airport in the north (RM141).

Boat In the high season, the Pan Silver Ferry (05 685 1046) runs between Lumut and Pangkor town every 30 minutes from 6.30 am to 8 pm. Most ferries to Lumut stop at Sungai Pinang Kecil before reaching Pangkor town, so don't hop off too soon. The one-way fare is RM2 for open-air boats or RM3 for air-con; just take whichever one departs first. On weekends and holidays, the last boat leaves, Pangkor town at 8.40 pm and Lumut at 9 pm.

@dganum mula-mula keliru.

Getting Around

There are no public buses available to tourists, so you will be forced to use Pangkor's shockingly pink minibus taxis. Set fares for up to three people from the jetty in Pangkor town include: Pasir Bogak "(RM4); Teluk Nipah (RM15); Pan Pacific Resort (RM18); the airport (RM18); and around the island (RM35 to RM40).

An ideal way to see the island is by motorcycle or bicycle. There are a number of places at Pangkor town, Pasir Bogak and Teluk Nipah that rent motorcycles for around RM30 per day and bicycles for RM15. Cars must be left on the mainland.
