Synopsis:
3 Deewarein is the saga of three prisoners, Jaggu (Jackie Shroff), a lawyer who seeks solace in the verses of his poetry, poetry that is the essence of his being.
Nagya (Nagesh Kukunoor), a man aggrieved with the world, and Ishaan (Naseeruddin Shah), a natural charmer, for whom life means sheer freedom.
The three develop a special bond in prison; becoming friends for the uncertain span of time that fate holds for them.
Mohan (Gulshan Grover) is the prison warden, who strongly believes in holistic reformation and perceives prisons as home to prisoners and not as cages for animals.
Enter Chandrika (Juhi Chawla), a documentary filmmaker wanting to make a film on these three convicts. As the documentary progresses, a bond begins to evolve between Chandrika and the three men...
And with this bond unfolds an inexplicable series of events, that leads to an edge of the seat finale…

In the film’s opening you see the three men and the murders that they are in prison for. Jaggu is holding a dead, bloody woman in his arms on a bed and Nagya is arguing with his wife on a sidewalk when she is suddenly pushed into traffic. Ishaan is robbing a bank and when he turns to leave, the teller sets off the alarm. He turns around and points a gun at her, but lowers his arm. Then he trips over someone who is lying on the floor (with the other customers) and his arm jerks up and he shoots the pregnant teller in the stomach.
Ishaan turns out to be the one that is connected to all 3 crimes. When he was robbing the bank, it was Chandrika who was on the floor that he tripped over. She never spoke out about it because it was her sister that was the teller. She went to the prison to film a documentary to get close to Ishaan. She pretends to have fallen in love with him and helps him escape. He remembered seeing her in the courtroom so he knew she was up to something, but not what. When he escapes and goes to her house, she pulls a gun on him. He cries out to wait and then we see everything that happened.
When Ishaan shot the teller, he took off running. He pushed through the crowd on the sidewalk by the curb and accidentally pushed Nagya’s wife in traffic. Then he ran to see his lover and she laughed at him and his plans for them running away together. It was all a game to her – she never wanted to. He gets mad and pushes her down the stairs, killing her. He hears a car pull up and picks up the body and puts her in the bed, then hides on the terrace. He sees Jaggu come in and stab his already dead wife.
Jaggu is saved from a hanging just in the nick of time with Ishaan’s confession. Jaggu and Nagya go free.
On a side note, Chandrika, who had been trapped in a loveless and abusive marriage, wakes her husband up by pouring gasoline all over him. She holds a candle and says if he does not leave her she will kill him.
