How I got into Bollywood films:
I was getting ready one morning and had the Independent Channel on. They were showing a documentary called Bollywood Bound, about Indians living in Canada that wanted to make it over in Bollywood. I had heard of Bollywood before, but have never thought much of it nor have seen any films before.
The documentary showed a couple clips though and got my interest up. I'm a memeber of Netflix so I just went to their foreign section and picked one randomly. That movie was Akele Hum Akele Tum. And after that I was hooked.
Exactly what are Bollywood films?
Bollywood is the nickname for the movie industry based out of Mumbai, India. They crank out an insane amount of movies each year (estimated at around 700-800 films). The movies are usually "masala" movies with all different types of ingredients going into one film: action, drama, comedy, tragedy and above all else, romance.
How Bollywood has affected my life:
The most obvious way it has affected my life is that it has introduced a new culture to me. I have tried Indian food for the first time in my life and have discovered it is my favorite food by far.
I have also started taking Hindi lessons. I have always wanted to know a second language and my love of Bollywood films has finally made me go out and start taking language lessons.
I've also met some great people that I normally never would have met. I belong to the Bollywhat.com forum and through that I have not only expanded my knowledge of Bollywood, but have met some great people. In fact, in September of 2004 I will be flying out to meet a couple of them and attending the Bollywood Temptations concert in Washinton, D.C.
