Synopsis:
The film is about three distinct characters, Akash (Aamir Khan), Sameer (Saif Ali Khan) and Siddharth (Akshaye Khanna), their individual relationships and the effect that these relationships have on them. Love. One term that can hold different meanings even for close friends like Akash, Sameer and Siddharth. Welcome to a summer of their lives. So you have Akash who does not believe in the concept of love. Two weeks is all that he is willing to give a perfectly healthy relationship. Incidentally, he feels even two weeks is a bit too much! Sameer, like a lot of us, is in love with the idea of being in love. He wants to be in love. But Sameer has not quite understood the concept yet and tends to wear his heart on his sleeve. So this young man is looking for the perfect woman in his life... The most mature, sensitive and understanding of these three is Siddharth. Sid, as he is fondly called, seems to know the true meaning of life. According to his friends, neighbours and even the dogs, Siddharth knows it all. The women who come and change their lives are Shalini (Preity Zinta) and Tara Jaiswal (Dimple Kapadia). Sonali Kulkarni also plays an important role in Dil Chahta Hai. SPOILER:
Akash and Sid have a falling out when Sid admits to have fallen in love with Tara, an older woman. Akash makes some crude remarks and Sid hits him. Akash then flies off to Australia to do some work for his father’s company. On the plane, he sits next to Shalini, who he had met earlier in a club. They wind up spending time together in Australia and Akash winds up falling in love with her. However, she is engaged.
Sameer in the meantime relunctantly meets a girl, Pooja (Sonali Kulkarni), that their parents are trying to get him interested in. He falls in love almost at first sight, while she doesn’t like the idea of arranged marriages. After some time, they fall in love with each other.
Sid admits to Tara that he loves her but she doesn’t take the news well. She wants to keep things the same between them. She winds up succumbing to liver failure due to her heavy drinking and dies with Sid by her side.
When Shalini returns to India for her wedding, Akash shows up and proposes to her on her engagement night. Shalini’s fiance’s parents (who have raised her since she lost her own parents) wish her to be happy and tell their son to step aside.
The movie ends with Pooja, Sameer, Akash, Shalini and Sid having a picnic on the beach. Sid sees a pretty girl standing nearby and goes to talk to her.
