Synopsis:
When marriage plans between childhood sweethearts Devdas (Shahrukh Khan) and Paro (Aishwarya Rai) are thwarted by their parents, a rift is created between the two families. Paro is married off to a rich older man, leaving the two lovers terribly unhappy.
Tormented by his longing for Paro, Devdas turns to alcohol for comfort, even refusing the advances of the beautiful courtesan Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). Paro, meanwhile, is miserable with her luxurious yet emotionally empty new life. (taken from tribute.ca)
SPOILER:
Devdas finally admits to loving Chandramukhi, but he cannot let go of his love for Paro all the same. Knowing that more liquor will kill him, he has a final drink with his friend Chunnilal (Jackie Shroff) on his way back to Paro’s house. Once he arrives at Paro’s house he collapses outside of it by the gate. Paro, inside the house, eventually comes to realize that he is the man she heard about lying out there.
Paro had been punished by her husband (due to her friendship with Chandramukhi that embarrassed the family at a religious function) and told to stay indoors. When she finds out that Devdas is lying out there dying, she runs out to him. The family however stop her and the gates close just as she reaches them.
Devdas dies watching her trying to run to him.
