Synopsis:
Choices... to choose between right or wrong is simple, but what defines one's life is the decision between the greater of two goods or the lesser of two evils. This is the advice Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) receives from her father just as she is about to venture out into the world on her own for the very first time. Little does she know that these very words will shape her life. Zooni, a blind Kashmiri girl, Rehan Qadri (Aamir Khan), a local tour guide and an incorrigible flirt, who goes from city to city exploring their architecture and also the women. Her friends warn her against this good-for-nothing roadside Romeo, but she chooses to ignore them. She is not one to be protected. It is now her time to discover life, and love. Is this really the right choice? Rehan is fascinated by Zooni. He truly wants her to see life as it should be seen, in its many colors - and as he promises her, the time spent with him will be the most precious in all her life. Zooni sees Delhi, life and love like she never has, because of Rehan. SPOILER:
Zooni is shown to be quite close to her parents. They relunctantly send her on her way with a group of girls who are going to perform at the Presidential Palace in Delhi for Republic Day. They will sing and dance. While in Delhi they decide to sight see and Rehan winds up being their tour guide. He takes an instant liking to Zooni and he pursues her. This is pretty much the first half of the picture, their romance.
The night of the performance comes and Zooni begs Jolly (a nice security guard whom she and Rehan have gotten to know) to let Rehan in to see her perform. Jolly says he can not do it. During Zooni's performance however, we see Jolly lets Rehan in after all. The gals on the stage tell her he is there and she happily finishes.
Rehan and Zooni wind up spending a lot of time together. They wind up sleeping together the night she is to leave to go home. She wakes up Rehan and is insistent to get going as it is late. Rehan shows quite the relunctance to have her go, but does not say anything. Zooni gets on the train and it starts to go as she starts crying. Rehan then shows up and she goes into his arms and he carries her off of the train.
Zooni calls her parents and says she has found her Prince and that they are going to get married. The parents say they will come to Delhi. In the meantime, Zooni goes to see an eye specialist to see if she can get her eyesight back. The doctor says he will do the operation. They are going to do the operation before her parents come to visit. On the day of the operation, Rehan is very quiet and gives Zooni the necklace he has always worn throughout the first part of the movie. He says he loves her and he will see her later.
A bomb blast goes off at the Palace and several people are killed. Zooni learns of this when she wakes up (and she can see) and her parents take her to a room in the hospital. Zooni keeps asking where Rehan is but no one answers her. Finally they tell her that they need her to identify Rehan so that they know if he was there or not. She looks at Rehan's things (a swatch from his sweater that she knitted, etc) but doesn't know until she feels them. Then she knows it is his things.
Meanwhile, the authorities are trying to figure out who did the bombing. They guess it is a terrorist group IFK (I think that's who they were...sorry if I have the initials wrong!). They are a group of radicals from Kashmir who want to have an independent Kashmir. There is one leader in this group who they have been after for some time.
As they are describing him, the camera shows someone walking in an airport. We finally see that it is Rehan. He is the big terrorist responsible for killing a lot of people over the years. Rehan stops outside and holds a picture of Zooni. He talks to it and apologizes for falling in love with her. We see flashbacks and it is revealed that he got into see her performance so he could take pictures of the Palace for recon. He then shot and killed Jolly the day of the bombing. He tears up the picture of Zooni and throws the scraps to the winds.
Intermission
It is now seven years later and the authorities have not found their man. They have learned that the IFK have stolen a nuclear bomb, but that the trigger they need to operate it is secured in different locations. They will be coming after that next. They decide to bring the triggers all there in one location so they can't get them. They call an army base which has one of the triggers to tell them they need to bring it in. We see Rehan is there at the camp, undercover as an army man. He had been waiting for this day.
Rehan and a team of men fly in a helicopter to their destination. Rehan is pouring them all drinks from a thermos and they are all talking. Suddenly one of the men convulses for a bit and then falls down. One by one the men are falling sick. Turns out Rehan was serving them poison drinks. Rehan grabs the trigger, throws a live grenade towards the cockpit and jumps out of the helicopter with a parachute.
The authorities figure out where the IFK man is and that he is posing as a missing army man. They figure out his plan and track him down trying to escape. There is a big shoot out and Rehan winds up klling or evading everyone. He is seriously wounded however. He sees a house in the distance and struggles to get to it. He bangs on the door and Zooni answers. Rehan is shocked and speechless. Zooni starts yelling out "Rehan" as Rehan falls in a faint on the porch. Then a little boy comes up to the door. He is wering a replica of the necklace Rehan gave Zooni earlier (she is wearing Rehan's). It is obviously Rehan's son. Zooni's father (a widower now) is also living with them.
Rehan recovers at their house and during all this time he is getting to know his son and Zooni again. At first Rehan tries to push them away, but he eventually lets them in. One thing to note is that the son is always saying to Zooni "Rehan loves you more than you love Rehan."
Rehan finds Zooni late one night sitting up in the living room with his old damaged sweater and things. He says nothing and she helps him change his bandages. This continues until finally one night Rehan finally tells her who he is. He says (since he was wearing a soldier's uniform) that he was on a secret mission. Zooni freaks out at him and runs upstairs.
In the morning, Zooni's father and son are up, but Rehan is nowhere to be seen. They tell her that Rehan has left. Zooni grabs her coat and runs after Rehan. She catches up with him and then slaps him and yells at him for leaving her again. Then she hugs him and then we see Zooni's father marrying them both.
Meanwhile, the authorities are not able to continue searching for Rehan because a blizzard has been going on for a couple days. They finally decide to go to the media and put out bulletins on the TV.
At Zooni's house, a TV bulletin comes on warning about someone in a soldiers outfit that is badly wounded and that has an electronic device (they show a picture of the trigger Rehan is carrying). Rehan is scared Zooni's dad saw it and will say something, but Zooni's dad just changes the channel. A friend of the family's visits and it turns out he is a Colonel (retired I think). The Col. divulges he has a CB radio at his house. Rehan asks if he could use it and contact his unit.
Rehan decides to go use the CB one day and Zooni's father goes with him. Before they leave, Zooni's father had checked through Rehan's things and found the trigger. He now knows that he is a wanted man. They drive to the Col.'s house and when they get there, the father pulls a gun on Rehan. They struggle and Zooni's father falls off of a cliff and dies. Rehan screams and reaches for him. It is obvious Rehan did not want this to happen. He then goes inside the Col.'s house and radios his boss. (The leader happens to be his grandfather) After Rehan hangs up, he notices that the Col. is standing there and heard everything. Rehan just sighs sadly.
Zooni and her son were out getting water from the lake. All of a sudden she sees her father floating under the ice. She screams and runs inside with her son. Finally when it is dark, Rehan returns. Zooni starts to tell him "Rehan, my father - -" and he says he left her father at the Col.'s house. He was going to spend the night there. Then Rehan goes upstairs to go take a shower. Zooni then knows that Rehan had something to do with her father's death. The TV bulletin comes on again, this time with a composite sketch of Rehan.
Zooni walks silently upstairs and goes through his things, finding the trigger. When Rehan gets out of the shower, he hears a car start up. He goes to the window to see Zooni driving away with their son in the car. He gets dressed and starts running down the road towards the Col.'s house.
Zooni gets to the house and starts yelling for the Col. She then sees blood stains on the floor as if a body and been dragged across it. Zooni uses the CB radio and reaches the authorities. She tells them her husband is the man they are looking for. They say that the blizzard is going to let up the next day and that's when they will have to come get her. (The same day Rehan's men were coming to get him)
Zooni spends the night there and in the morning Rehan reaches the house. He comes in and Zooni opens the door for him. Zooni confronts him about her father's death and he says it was an accident. When she asks if the Col.'s death was an accident too, he does not answer her. Rehan says to just let him finish this mission and then he will stay with her and their son forever. Zooni says she can not let him do it. Rehan says if she does not, then his grandfather will kill them all.
The sound of a helicopter is heard and Rehan says it is his grandfather. Zooni says "or the army". Rehan looks out and it is his grandfather. He takes the trigger from her. She pulls out a gun, but he just puts her arm back down. Then he walks outside. Zooni runs out and points the gun at him. She yells at him and pleads not to do it for their son's sake. He keeps walking and she shoots him once.
Rehan goes down, then whips out a gun and angrily points it at her. They are then having a stand off, with both guns pointed at the other. The movie shows Rehan flashing back to memories of their time together and finally he puts his gun down. Then he stand up and starts walking towards the helicopter again. Zooni has flashbacks too, but she pulls the trigger and takes him down again.
The grandfather starts to get ready to shoot Zooni from the air, but the army shows up then and blows them out of the sky. Zooni runs to Rehan crying and puts his head in her lap, kissing his face all over. Rehan then says "Rehan loves you more than you love Rehan." And then he dies.
The movie ends with Zooni and her son at Rehan's grave. It is next to her father's grave.
