Synopsis:
New York. April 2003. The late winter continues…
For Naina Catherine Kapur [Preity Zinta], life is cold, grey and dull – as it has been ever since a family tragedy shook her world.
Between the constant bickering in her half Punjabi, half Catholic household, her grand-mother's temper, looking after her little sister and brother and helping her mother Jennifer [Jaya Bachchan] deal with the family's financial troubles – Naina has no time for parties, fun or herself.
She is 23, going on 50. She is serious, she is boring.
Enter Aman Mathur [Shah Rukh Khan]. Like a whiff of fresh air, he moves into their tiny Indian neighbourhood to take it over, helping others solve their problems and face life's little challenges – Aman has all the answers.
Much to Naina's irritation, he insists on interfering in her life too…
Aman pushes Naina into doing things that she would never dream of doing. He nags her till she learns to smile. He conspires with friend Rohit [Saif Ali Khan], an eligible Manhattan bachelor, to help her find happiness.
KAL HO NAA HO is the story of Aman, Rohit and Naina's journey together. How they discover themselves, find the courage to love and come together to celebrate life. -- © Eros International
SPOILER:
Aman and Rohit work together to get Naina to fall in love with Rohit. During this, Aman falls in love with Naina. Naina was having feelings for Aman, but then was drawn to Rohit.
Naina finds out about their manipulating and gets angry. Aman convinces Naina that Rohit really does love her for real and Naina hesitantly agrees to marry Rohit.
While out shopping, Naina and Rohit bump into who they thought was Aman’s wife (Aman had told Naina he was married to stop her from liking him) but find out it’s really Aman’s doctor. Aman is dying of heart disease.
Aman finds Naina crying by the water and they admit they love each other.
Meanwhile, Jennifer and her mother-in-law’s fighting finally reaches the breaking point. Jennifer’s mother-in-law blamed Jennifer for her son’s suicide but the truth comes out. Naina’s little sister Gia (Jhanak Shukla) is really Jennifer’s husband’s child by another woman..one he had an affair with. Jennifer took the child in when the mother abandoned her and cared for her like she was her own. Jennifer’s husband couldn’t take the guilt and killed himself. This reconciles the grandmother with Gia and Jennifer.
Rohit and Naina get married (although she and Aman are still in love) and Aman later dies (the viewer doesn’t actually see his death). The movie is told with Naina narrating. You then see her as an older woman, talking with Rohit and Gia. Rohit and Naina are in love and happy and they have a daughter. They say how wonderful it was that Aman had come into their lives.
