Synopsis:
The film is set in the India of the tumultuous 1930's when nationalists fighting for the country's independence rose up as one, urging the British to quit. At this time, a young Indian, Kisna (Vivek Oberoi) befriends and then shields a British girl Katherine (Antonia Bernath), from an enraged mob of nationalists including Kisna's own uncle and brother. Katherine is the young daughter of a ruthless British collector. Kisna takes it upon himself to escort Katherine to the safety of the British High Commission in New Delhi, who will arrange for her to board a ship home. A tender attraction develops between Kisna and Katherine during the journey, a love story that is torn between ` Karma ' (the noble deed) and ` Dharma ' (the duty). Laxmi (Isha Shravani), the Indian girl Kisna is engaged to, forms the third point in an emotional triangle involving the Indo-British romantic pair. (written by Anwar on imdb.com)
SPOILER:
This movie is told as a flashback when an elderly Katherine comes to visit India.
Kisna (Vivek Oberoi) and Katherine (Antonia Bernath) fall in love on their journey to safety. Kisna finally has a confrontation with his uncle and brother. He kills his uncle, but not his brother. He and his brother have an emotional confrontation with Katherine yelling to let her die rather than have Kisna kill his brother. This affects the brother and he asks Kisna if he loves her. Kisna then admits his love for Katherine.
Later on, they have a confrontation with the evil Prince who has been trying to kidnap Katherine for his own. Kisna's brother winds up killing him, saving Kisna's life.
They eventually get to safety (along the way they find her mother. Her father was killed earlier by an angry mob) and Katherine arranges it for Kisna to have passage to England.
Kisna says that he can not accompany her. He loves her, but he has a duty to marry Laxmi. He says their love will still be strong even though they are apart.
Back to present day, an elderly Kathering meets Laxmi. Laxmi tells her that while he was a good husband, Kisna only loved Katherine. Laxmi goes on to say she realized how great his love was when he requested his ashes be immersed in the Ganges on the same bank where he and Katherine shared a sacred dip. We find out that Katherine had written in her will that the same be done with her ashes.
