SPOILER:
At the beginning of the movie we see a woman being discharged from the Sanatorium. She throws her uniform back at the workers and we see it has a number 36 on it. A worker mentions that the number 36 is not bad, it is lucky. Dr. Tanvi (Kareena Kapoor) arrives to say goodbye to her. The woman does not really remember her and is rude to her. Tanvi is very upset by this.
Anand (Salman Khan) is admitted to the Sanatorium by his elder brother. It turns out that Anand is a convicted murderer and was declared insane by the courts. Anand is given the same numbered uniform, #36. This causes Tanvi to dislike him right away and be harsher on him because of the way the woman treated her earlier in the movie. Anand soon finds out that the Sanatorium is harshly run by Tanvi’s father, Dr. Khurana (Om Puri) who does not shy away from ordering shock treatments as punishment. Anand is unfortunately subjected to this. Anand was caught when he swapped clothes with a guard he bribed to run out to get something for another patient. Both were caught and the guard was immediately fired despite his pleading.
Another doctor working there, Dr. Sunil (Jackie Shroff) recognizes Anand. Sunil’s mother was Anand’s family’s maid. Anand’s father treated Sunil very well and even helped him with money to pursue his dreams of becoming a doctor. Anand was a young boy when Sunil was there and they got on very well together. Unfortunately, Anand does not recognize Sunil.
When Dr. Khurana leaves to go to a conference, Sunil, determined to help Anand, talks with Tanvi and asks her to try to treat Anand. But instead of using force as treatment, using love. Tanvi at first rejects this idea so Sunil gives her Anand’s journal to read about what happened to him.
This is when we get a flashback as to how Anand and Maya (Rimii Sen) met and what had happened to her. Once Anand finally captured Maya’s heart, she liked to play little tricks on him to get back on him. (He had pretended he had set himself on fire when Maya did not say she loved him.) She pretended that she did not know how to ride a horse and screamed and yelled when the horse took off. Anand ran after her, but it turned out she was just joking. She knew how to ride very well, she just wanted to scare him. She did it again when she said she did not know how to drive and then she took off like a race car driver, throwing Anand in the back seat. So when they were at a restaurant and she mentioned she did not know how to swim, Anand thought she was joking. They were outside next to a pool and Anand said he was going to get the bill and pay for it. He picked her up while she screamed she was scared and that she didn’t know how to swim and threw her in. Then he walked off to pay for the bill. When he came back, she was dead in the water from drowning.
Tanvi then decides to help him. With Sunil’s help, they try to make him face what happened to Maya so he will regain his sanity again. Eventually he does recover and Tanvi has found that she has fallen in love with him. The fired guard from before sees them together and goes to ask Dr. Khurana for his job back. Dr. Khurana has since come back with a man, Karan (Sunil Shetty), who is meant to marry Tanvi. Dr. Khurana yells at the guard and says no he can not have his job back. So the guard tells him all about Tanvi and Anand. Karan overhears this bit of news.
Anand in the meantime has asked to leave now that he is recovered. But Dr. Khurana, having confirmed the guard’s story from Sunil, is determined to keep him and Tanvi apart and has him thrown in a solitary cell. Sunil calls up Tanvi and tells her that she has to make a choice. She needs to run away with Anand or continue on without him. She decides to run away with Anand and they make a plan. In the meantime, Dr. Khurana is hell-bent on keeping the two apart. He picks up the phone and says to get number 36 to the operating room. Sunil phones Tanvi and says to get to the hospital now and he will be waiting outside for her with Anand. Karan winds up driving Tanvi to the hospital, not wanting to keep the lovers apart.
Sunil goes to look for Anand and is shocked to find him lying in a vegetative state. He sees that he has been given a lobotomy. He can’t get over how Anand is lying there and he says how Anand deserves better than this. Sunil then takes a pillow and smothers Anand, killing him.
Sunil then barges into Dr. Khurana’s office and tells him to call the police. He says he has killed Anand for him, for himself and for Anand. Tanvi is standing in the doorway and drops her suitcase when she hears that Anand was killed.
The scene then changes to a new day and we see a patient being wheeled outside in a wheelchair. Tanvi is sitting in the chair with a blank look on her face and wearing the uniform #36. She was driven to insanity by the thought of losing Anand.
