THE FULL MOVIE SPOILER:
NOTE: All the Russian dialogue spoken in the movie did not have subtitles. So when I’m mentioning any Russian characters, I’m taking my best guess as to what’s going on unless it’s specified by Salman’s character.
The movie opens with Dhara writing a letter to her friend Priya in India by a pond in the middle of a forest. We find out she is the sister of Lucky and their father works in the Indian embassy. Lucky finds a four leaf clover and tells her sister that it is good for luck, but only for one time. She gives it to Dhara who is nervous about passing her exams.
At school, Lucky is talking with her friends, 3 Indian girls in her class. Her friend Sunaina is primping and excited about a man that’s coming back to town, but doesn’t say who. The other girls tease Lucky saying she wouldn’t know what to say to a boy. Lucky objects.
(Song: Lucky Lips)
Sunaina then says the man that’s coming is Aditya, who is Ambassador Sekhri’s son. Sunaina is convinced that she’ll turn his head. At home, Lucky calls Sunaina in a panic saying she had misread the schedule for her exams and studied for history when she should have been studying for geography for an exam the next day. Sunaina laughs at her and Lucky hangs up.
Lucky’s mother comes in to give Lucky her bag she has packed for Lucky’s sleepover at Sunaina’s the next night. She mentions she’s worried about Lucky’s father. He mentioned there is some problem brewing and people have been rioting. She tells Lucky to get some sleep and study in the morning.
Lucky oversleeps the next morning and is in a rush to get off to school. She is studying the entire time, cramming everything she can in at the last minute. Her father calls and talks with her. While on the phone, the Ambassador comes in and tells him that his son Aditya is coming and to make sure he has no problems with security as he will be in a meeting. Apparently Adi is driving down to see him as he loves his car so much. Lucky’s father wishes Lucky good luck and hangs up. Lucky prays to God asking for a miracle to let the exams be postponed.
As Lucky is biking to school, she gets a flat tire. While walking her bike through the woods, she passes a man who is sitting outside a camper. He offers to help fix her tire. She refuses, not trusting him, but he insists and wrests the bike from her and takes it into the camper. Then he comes back outside and attacks her, trying to drag her into the camper. Lucky hits him hard on the head with her lunch pail and takes off running, the man chasing her. She runs to a big house with a gate, but the gate is locked. She sees a nice car sitting outside and hides in the backseat. The man arrives and sees something she dropped outside the car and peers inside. He opens the door and is about to look in when Adi arrives thinking he’s trying to steal the car and stops him. The man pulls a knife, but Adi beats him and the man runs away.
Adi is then driving down the road and stops at a road block. There is a truck with the back opened and a blonde sitting there. She starts flirting with Adi through gestures. The checkpoint guard wants Adi’s passport and takes it. Then he motions to the back seat. Adi says there’s nothing there and to check. He pulls the passenger seat down and then motions in the back. The guard is talking angrily and Adi picks up the blanket and Lucky is revealed. Adi is shocked to see her and finds out she is an Indian. She has no passport with her and this upsets the guard. Military vehicles then start coming down the road. They go over a bridge and we see a man hidden underneath. He talks on his walkie talkie and the blonde that Adi was flirting with earlier talks back. Then a small army comes up the embankment and attacks the vehicles. Adi tries to escape the battle and starts driving off.
Adi stops when he sees a woman and son trapped in a burning car. He gets out and frees them and as he is leading them to safety he yells at Lucky to drive his car out of the way of an approaching tank. She is frozen and doesn’t move and he gets in and drives off just in time. The manage to escape from the battle. He is angry and wants to know why she didn’t drive when he was yelling at her and she says she doesn’t know how.
At the embassy, we see Indians arriving with their luggage to get to safety. Lucky’s father volunteers to take a security squadron to go search for Adi. The Ambassador says no one will leave the embassy until he knows how bad the situation is. They get to know by a videotape someone plays for them. Before all communications were lost, they caught news footage off the BBC network.
Adi drives them to a cemetery where they can hide out for the time being. They finally introduce themselves to each other and Lucky realizes this is the man Sunaina was excited about seeing. Adi says he will see that Lucky gets home.
Back at the embassy, there is a meeting where they are discussing the importance of seeing that Indians there are safe. Lucky’s mother then rushes in to tell her husband that Lucky hasn’t returned from school.
At the cemetery, Adi tries to get some news on the radio. He’s finally able to hear something and explains to Lucky using a map that there is fighting between the government and rebels all around them and they need to find a way out. Lucky says there is a bee and Adi says to kill it. She says ok, but it will hurt and hits him hard on the back. He gets upset and talks about “damn school girls”. This upsets Lucky and she runs off crying. She pulls back her jacket a big and looks at her torn shirt. Adi finds her and sees her as she quickly pulls the coat back in place. Adi, not knowing what had happened, teases her about having a boyfriend because she had a hickey. She gets mad and tells him what happened to her and how she came to be in his car.
We then find out that there is a tense cease fire going on and a curfew has been imposed.
Adi eats food from Lucky’s lunch box, but Lucky says she isn’t hungry and doesn’t eat anything. She gives him her water bottle from her bag. They sleep in the car. Adi gives her a blanket to sleep in the back seat while he is trying to sleep sitting up in the front. Lucky can’t get to sleep. Adi says if it’s because of him that she’s scared, she can trust him. She looks at him and starts to daydream.

At the embassy, the Ambassador brings in a man he thinks can find Lucky and Adi. He is Pindi, or better known as P.D. He used to be in Special Intelligence and is also a “master of disguise” and the Ambassador has faith in him. PD tells Lucky’s mother that Lucky’s bike was found in the forest near the school and also gives her an item of clothing Lucky dropped and says he will find her.
The next day at the cemetery, Lucky is hungry. Adi decides to go look for food and tells Lucky to stay put and watch the car as he doesn’t want anything to happen to it. Lucky asks how she will find him and Adi gives her a ball of yarn. He takes an end and starts to walk away saying to follow the yarn if she wants to find him. He comes across a water pump and fills the water bottle up with it, then moves on.
Cut to the embassy and PD is there in disguise. At first he fools the Ambassador and then he figures it out. PD tells the Ambassador that Lucky is with Adi. They were last seen at the security checkpoint. PD then dons another disguise and sets out to find a phone line to try to get Adi on his cell phone.
Lucky starts getting scared being out there by herself. She eventually follows the yarn and finds Adi. Adi is on the other side of a pond and they talk. Adi tells Lucky she can drink water from the bottle he filled that’s near his stuff by Lucky. Then Adi’s cell phone rings and it is PD. PD asks them where they are and says he will come get them. Adi has caught some fish and tells Lucky to go find some firewood. We get a glimpse that feelings have started with both of them. They talk to themselves, by “talking” to Sunaina. Lucky is drinking from the water bottle and tells Sunaina that she is in love with Adi even though she knows Sunaina likes him. Adi, who from Lucky found out that Sunaina is her schoolmate, tells Sunaina that he likes Lucky very much, even though she seems a bit young.
A helicopter is then flying above them with someone on a loudspeaker. Adi hears it and I guess it was a warning about the water. Adi screams to Lucky not to drink the water. Lucky is coughing and becoming very weak. She continues to drink water thinking that will help her. Adi finds her and tells her the water was poisoned. They race to find help in his car. He stops next to a funeral procession.
There are many coffins being carried. Adi quietly is asking anyone for help but everyone ignores him. Then a man comes up to them asking if they need help in Hindi. He is a half Indian he says. Then he asks what can Adi give to him for help? Adi relunctantly gives some cash, but the man says that’s not enough. He then asks if the car is his. Adi gives up the keys to the man to save Lucky’s live. The man drives them to his father’s house, who is a doctor. Then the man leaves. The doctor gives Lucky some medication then tells Adi to pray.
(Song: Sun Zara)
Lucky finally awakens while Adi is holding her.
At the embassy, women are praying. Suddenly the doors burst open and injured people come in. They are Indians who were attacked on their way to the embassy. Everyone realizes that no one is safe in the city anymore.
The doctor sees that the police are searching neighboring homes, looking for rebels. He tells Adi that he and Lucky must leave or else they will be in trouble. Adi pleads to the doctor to just send him away, but let Lucky stay as it is freezing outside. The doctor refuses. Adi and Lucky leave via the rooftops. Lucky is freezing and hypothermia is setting in. They find refuge in what seems to be a storage house for costumes and art and all sorts of strange things. Police burst in to search the place, but an alarm going off outside makes them stop. They rush outside and gunfire is heard.
Cut to the embassy where the ambassador is saying that all Indians will be evacuated to India. In 12 hours everyone in the embassy will be taken to the airport.
Lucky and Adi walk around the building they are in. Adi walks on ahead and Lucky slumps to the floor exhausted and wanting to go to sleep. Adi wakes her up. She is not allowed to sleep because of the hypothermia. He tries to keep her awake.
(Song: Chori Chori)
Adi falls asleep at the end of the song and Lucky is awake by herself. She wanders off and is sitting down in a room. She looks up and one of the costumed figures waves at her. She is scared and hides behind her hands. Then someone taps her on the shoulder and it’s the person in the costume and mask. Adi comes up and pretends to have a gun. The man says a little rhyme and Adi recognizes him and embraces him. It’s PD who has tracked them down and has come to get them.
Before leaving the three of them put on Russian army uniforms. PD has a friend in the Russian army and they are going to try to blend in with his battalion, who will be leaving the area soon. PD puts a fake mustache on Lucky. When they are walking with the battalion, a soldier trips a land mine and they go under attack from the rebels. PD is separated from Lucky and Adi, who are taken prisoner with a few other Russian soldiers.
At a rebel campsite, the leader there is yelling at the Russian prisoners. He hands Lucky a piece of paper and a pen. Lucky asks Adi what they want. Adi says they want a map of the Russian army base. Adi takes the paper and pen and draws a map and hands it back to Lucky. We see PD show up in disguise, walking with some rebels. The leader then comes back and takes the map, looks at it and tears it up knowing it’s fake. He hits Lucky across the face causing her hair to come out under her helmet. The leader is surprised and grabs her, ripping the mustache off. He pulls out a knife and starts to open her jacket. Adi attacks him and stabs him in the leg, then grabs a gun and holds it to his head as a hostage. This didn’t seem to matter to the rebels and they open fire, killing the other Russian prisoners.
PD gets into a truck and yells at Lucky and Adi to get in. He starts driving away and Lucky and Adi jump onto the ladder on the back and start to climb on top. We see the leader had grabbed onto the side of the truck. He gets over to the driver’s door and pulls PD out and they both fall to the ground while the truck speeds off. PD winds up killing the leader.
Adi makes his way to the front and sees the engine is on fire and PD is gone. He and Lucky jump off towards a snowy hill and the truck explodes. Adi protects Lucky as they roll down the hill. Then the get up to make their way to safety.
(Song: Shayad Yahi To Pyar Hai)
They come upon railroad tracks and follow them to a train station. The station is crowded with people desperate to get out of the area. They can’t find any space and are running along side the train when it starts going. They find one car with the door open and Adi talks in Russian with the man by the door and they get Lucky inside. Lucky screams for Adi, but he is falling behind the train and isn’t trying to get in. The car door is then shut. Adi says to himself “They said there was only room for one.” Adi continues to jog after the train and finally collapses. Lucky is crying and banging on the car door, making her hands bloody. She finally slumps to the floor.
At the embassy, Lucky’s father is refusing to go anywhere until Lucky is found. The Ambassador tries to reason with him saying his son is out there too, but they must not pretend they don’t know how dangerous it is out there. He tells Lucky’s father not to make Dhara lose both a father and a sister. The Ambassador gives his word that the search for Lucky will continue when they leave. Lucky’s father leaves with the Ambassador.
Back in the train, Lucky is still crying. A little boy walks over to Lucky and points at the window in the car. He takes his slingshot and breaks it. Lucky hugs the child and jumps out the window.
We then see Dhara praying and holding up the four leaf clover she got from Lucky. She tells God she doesn’t want to pass her exams, but please give all the luck to Lucky.
Lucky is running back down the tracks and sees Adi collapsed on the ground. She calls out to him and he sees her running towards him. He angrily asks her why she came back. She hugs him and tells him she loves him. Adi says he knows – he has always known. He picks her up and carries her. Then Adi’s old car comes down the road and stops by them. PD gets out. Adi is ecstatic to see his car and they drive off towards where the plane is waiting. Dhara is outside the plane looking and hoping to see Lucky arrive. A car then drives up and PD, Lucky and Adi get out. There is a happy reunion with Lucky’s family and the Ambassador and his son Adi. PD tells Adi he will send his car home to him via a ship.
Before getting on the plane, Adi asks Lucky “Shall we go home?” Lucky answers, “Sure. But not mine. Yours.” Adi smiles at her and they board the plane.
