Synopsis:
Lallan (Abhishek Bachchan) is a criminal don, based in Calcutta. He loves, marries, and abuses his wife, Sashi Biswas (Rani Mukherjee); Michael Mukherjee (Ajay Devgan) is a student leader, who wants politicians like Prosonjeet Bhattacharya, to keep away from college elections; and then there is Arjun, carefree and spoilt, in love with Mira (Kareena Kapoor), who he just met, and who at one time wanted to relocate to the U.S., but then after meeting Michael, changes his mind and wants to be a politician. SPOILER:
The movie opens with Vivek hitching a ride on friendly stranger Ajay Devgan's bike in order to catch up with Kareena's cab as she is leaving him. They catch up with her on a bridge. Vivek gets off the bike and talks to her. Ajay continues his trip until he is shot by Abhishek, who has been following him. At this point the movie splits into three flashback tracks to follow each main character.
Abhishek is a small time hoodlum who is married to Rani. Rani wants him to go straight, but he prefers to follow in his elder brothers footsteps. Eventually, Rani has had enough. She is pregnant but gets an abortion. Abhishek is shaken. But instead of turning straight, he gets deeper into murder and extortion, eventually replacing his brother as the evil politician's muscle.
Ajay is a politically motivated student who tries to help villages fight against the evil politician. His girlfriend is Esha Deol.
Vivek is an apolitical happy go lucky type student. He romances Kareena.
Back to the present time Vivek rushes the wounded Ajay to the hospital. Abhishek tries to finish off Ajay at the hospital but Vivek intervenes and gets beaten up for his trouble. Vivek becomes involved in student politics.
Time passes. Abhishek tries to kill Vivek on the bridge this time but the healed Ajay intervenes and beats Abhishek up in an exciting fight amongst the moving cars.
The students get several members elected to the local assembly, including Ajay and Vivek. The evil politician welcomes them into his lair. You are left with the positive feeling that even though they are few now, the young reformers can grow in influence. - (Contributed by John)
