BAPHOMET
Baphomet, the god of the Knight Templars, as drawn by Eliphas Levi, the
Nineteenth Century French occultist. Baphomet or the Goat of Mendes is NOT
a figure of the Christian Devil. Rather it is a symbolic representation of
the pantheistic God who is the sum total of everything in the
universal or Pan. Symbolically, the Horns represent "Antemae" into the
Unmanifest Source of Power and are symbols or strength in the Old
Mysteries. The Goat is the beast symbolizing Regeneration and therefore
the Goat`s head with the center horn of fire represents the Light of
Wisdom and Regeneration brought about by activation of the Kundalini or
"Dragon Power" in the human body which rises to the Crown chakra which
would be approximately at the level of the center Horn of Fire in the
figure of Baphomet. The Kundalini or Serpent Fire is also represented by
the Caduceus of the Grand-Old-Man of the Qabalah. It also represents
agelessness and timelessness. The pentagram on the forehead has one point
up symbolizing that the material elements and senses are subservient to
the spiritual light. The waxing and waning moons represent the power to
create and dissolve, and life and death as reflected in the material
world.
The arms signify Mercy (Chesed)
and Justice (Geburah) in perfect balance on the Tree of Life. One arm is
feminine and the other masculine, the body too has both feminine and
masculine aspects, symbolizing the Androgynous State of Divinity and of
the human soul.
The figure combines all elements, the legs and doven feet represent Earth
and connection to the material world. The scales represent Water and the
emotions, the wings represent Air and Mind and Man struggle to rise above
the environment. The flame is the element of Fire and represents the
Spirit within fully activated. The Goat sits on a half-sphere which
represents the Universe. Only half is shown because man has not yet
learned to rule his own reality.
According to Eliphas Levi the name Baphomet comes from 3 abbreviations
spelled backwards - TEM.OHP.AB (for "Templi Omnium Hominum Pacis Abbas")
mean "the Father of the Temple of Peace of All Men". Aleister Crowley
wrote that the name should be spelled BAPHOMETR referring to "Father
Mithras", Mithras being a god of Solar-Phallic energy. He thought that
the name also meant the "Baptism of the Holy Ghost" or
"Baptism of Wisdom", the Holy Ghost being the Solar-Phallic energy in its most
sublimated, physical form.
