FAE MYTHOLOGY

 

 

Aengus Og: (Irish) God of love, beauty and youth. Belongs to the Tuatha De Danaan.

Ai: (Irish) Tuatha De Danaan poet. Before birth a druid told his mother he would have great powers.

 

Aillen Mac Midhna: Fairy musician who came out of his cave in Annwn only at Samhain to play his timpan at the feast.

 

Aine: (Irish) Goddess of love and a fairy queen. Associated with the moon. Often seen in the middle of a lake combing her hair.

 

Ankou: Called the King of the Dead. Collected souls when they died and escorted them to the land of the dead. Travels on November Eve as a feared fairy with his own group of subjects.

 

Annwn: (Welsh) A paradise which held the fountain of rebirth. Arawn was the lord of Annwn and always seen with hounds. Referred to as the “Land of Shadows”

 

Aonbharr: Magickal horse, travels on land or sea.

 

Arianrod: (Welsh) Mother of Dylan.

 

Asrai: Male and female ancient water fairies. Sometimes called sea ghosts, rarely seen and never in the day.

 

Banshee: Look at the following 2 entries.

Bean-Nighe: “Washer woman” Foretells death. Seen at a stream or river washing bloodstains from a white shirt.

 

Bean-Sidhe: A very beautiful woman with pale skin and red eyes. Feared by humans because of her loud moaning and screams which foretell the impending death of someone.

 

Bean-Fionn: Jenny Greentooth. Described as both hideous and very beautiful. Lives underwater and reaches up to grab small children under the water.

 

Bean-Tighe: King of the Dead. Collects souls upon death and escorts them to the land of the dead. Mainly seen on November Eve all in black with a black cart.

 

Blodeuwedd: (Welsh) Made to be a bride to Lieu Llaw-Gryffes by Gwydion and Math out of broom, oak and meadowsweet. She was later turned into an owl.

 

Bogie: Male hobgoblin. Enjoys tormenting travelers.

 

Brigid: (Irish) Triple Goddess of fertitlity.

 

Brownie: A small brown male fairy who wears dirty raggy clothes. Enjoys living with humans and helping out with chores. If crossed they become mean.

 

Cailleac Bhuer: Blue Hag or Stone Woman. Old lahy of human size who walks at night with a walking stick and a crow sitting on her left shoulder. Instant death if her staff touches you. If staff is found unattended it gives the finder the power of enchantment.

 

Ceridwen: (Welsh) A sorceress and the fertility goddess.

Changeling: A human baby switched by a fairy and replaced with a fairy baby close to death.

 

Cliodha: (Irish) Goddess of beauty who fell in love with a human. Had 3 magickal birds who could heal the sick or put them to sleep.

 

Corrigan: Female fairies who roam the earth by day as blond beautiful women and hideous old hags by night. If a human male loves both forms of the Corrigan equally than the enchantment is broken.

 

Dana: (Irish) Mother of Dagda. Tuatha De Danaan take their name from her. Mother goddess of Ireland.

 

Druids: Advisors, teaches and judges. Both male and female. Took up to 20 years to learn all the Druidic laws. Also able to foretell futures, interpret fairies will, prophets and magicians.

 

Duergarrs: Male fairies 2’ tall, unfriendly to humans. Guards fairy paths.

 

Dylan: (Welsh) Sea god.

 

Eire: (Irish) Goddess of Ireland.

 

Fairy Trees: Oak, Ash, Apple, Hazel, Rowan, Willow, Elder, Alder, Hawthorn, and Blackthorn.

 

Fairies/Faeries: All inhabitants of Fairyland.

 

Fir Darrigs: “Rat Boys”. Very ugly fairies that trick humans (and other fairies) out of their possessions. 

 

Gancanaghs: Beautiful male fairie who seduces women to fall in love with him then disappears leaving the women to search for him until their deaths.

 

Gnomes: Earth fairies. Very intelligent creatures who age quickly.

Goblins/Hobgoblins: Mischievous elves who haunt homes.

 

Knockers: Dwarf fairies who live underground.

 

Leanan-Sidhe: “Spirit of Life”. Inspirer to poets and artists. Her inspiration came at a price though. Those who use her die an early death.

 

Leprechauns: Solitary male fairie with ability to steal and hide treasures. Loves riddles and dares others to find his treasure.

 

Lhiannan-Shee: Beautiful vampiric fairie who either drains her victims blood or collectsit in a cauldron where she performs spells to keep herself beautiful and young.

 

Macha: (Irish) Triple goddess of war.

 

Mannan Mac Lir: (Irish) Major sea god.

 

Mermaids: Sea fairies with human upper bodies and fish tails. Known to take human lovers to the undersea kingdoms.

 

Mermen: Same as above but not as interested inhumans.

 

Morrigan: (Irish) Major triple goddess of war.

 

Phookas: Destructive fairies who travel in packs with bodies of goats or horses and heads of human males. Destroys crops. Humans and fairies both fear them and will avoid all contact with them.

 

Pixies: Small winged fairies with large heads, pointy ears and noses. Love dancing, music, and fancy clothes. Often mischievous.

 

Rhiannon: (Welsh) Name means “great Queen” or “maid of Annwn”.

 

Robin Goodfellow:  (Puck) Male fairie looks like a satyr with a young boys head and the body of a goat. Very playful and loves to play his pipes through the forest enticing animals and fairies both.

 

The Seelie-Court: Court consisting of all noble and good fairies whose code of fair and good ethics are different than the Unseelie Court.

 

Spriggans: Fairy monster who can inflate himself and float over the countryside. Create havoc on those who cross their paths. Can look like rocks.

 

Taliesin: Welsh wizard who was the first to acquire the gift of prophesy.

 

Tara: Ancient hill fort which became the capital of Tuatha De Danaan. Meeting place for fairie kings.

 

Tir Nan Og: ”Land of the Young”. Earthly paradise where time has stopped and the grass is always green and the flowers are always in bloom. A land of beauty where there is much music, hunting, love and eating.

 

Trooping faeries: One class of faeries, the other being solitary faeries who are less friendly to humans than trooping faeries.

 

Tuatha De Danaan: Earliest faeries. Origin of the faery race.

 

Tylwyth Teg: (Welsh) Fair Race. Faeries believed who lived in matriarchal clans.

 

The Unseelie Court: All evil in fairyland.

 

Will-o’-the’Wisps: Fairy Lights, Elf-fire, Night Whispers. Small winged faeries who have glowing lights that can be seen from meadows or hills at dusk.
