Head, beak, wings of an eagle. Body of a lion. Front feet are talons.
Sphinx
Egyptian. Body of a lion, head of a human. Sometimes with wings.
Greek. Creature of death. Bad luck, destruction. Female – winged lion body.
Guardian of temple entrances.
Titans
Greek. Huge human creatures – 25’ tall. Powerful & intelligent. Dressed in flowing clothes. Have own gods and culture.
Minotaur
Greek. Half taurine, half human. Kept in labyrinth until Thesus killed it. Powerful, savage.
Pegasus
Greek. Winged white horse. Poseidon & Medusa brought forth. When Persus cut off Medusa’s head Pegasus came out. Stubborn but intelligent.
Sasquatch
North American Yeti. “Hairy Man” Large ape like – 7’ tall with large ape like arms and a flattened nose. Covered with thick matt of hair. First sighted in 1811 but Native Americans saw him long before that.
Trolls
Scandinavian/Norse. Associated with an element. Not intelligent. Only way to kill is to burn it. Can regenerate if hacked apart. Trolls eat everything – even wood, rocks, metal. Guardian of byways. Bullies.
Unicorn
Heavy cloven hoofs with a single horn in center of forehead. Horn has healing power.
Brownies
Scotland. Invisible brown elves or house goblins. Lives in country buildings and helps do labors for families while they sleep. Protective and becomes attached to families. If treated badly they will vanish. Only children can see Brownies.
Dryads
Greek. Female spirits of nature. Preside over the forests. Born with a certain tree species and tree that it watches over. If the tree is destroyed the dryad perishes beside it. Dryads will punish humans that damage the trees.
Gorgon
Greek. Human body, legs of a snakes tail. Hair made of snakes. The gaze can turn a victim into stone if they look into its eyes. Three Gorgons – Medusa (mortal), Sthens, and Euryule who were both immortal.
Gremlins
Germany. Females are called Fifenellas, children are called Widgets. Various sizes. Hairy all over, usually brown in color. Stubby ears and wide grins. Every house has one that was brought in with an appliance. Originally friendly but men took all the credits for the inventions that they helped man with. Live in Mountains of Europe. Very strong.
Hellhounds
Red fur with glowing red eyes used to terrify its prey and to see in the dark. 4 ˝’ tall. Able to breathe fire. Very aggressive and expert hunters. Live in packs like wolves.
Jack Frost
Norse. Elf like who represents crops and cold weather. Leaves patterns in fall leaves and frost patterns on windows. Cause of icicles.
Leprechauns
Ireland. Small sprite who lives in farmhouses or wine cellars. Helps humans and does jobs for them. They ask for supplies and furniture and in return gives good luck objects. Merry little men dressed in old fashioned green clothes with buckled shoes and a red cap. Fairy cobblers. Makes elves shoes but only one, not a pair. If captured by a human will give a treasure.
Pixies
Cornwall. Small folk who live on dons and moors in Cornwall. Originally believed to be Druids who fought Christianity. The more they fought the smaller they got. Also believed to be a race that was neither good enough for Heaven or bad enough for Hell, doomed to Earth. Steals horses and makes nightly trips over moors. Tricks humans by throwing things around the house. Hardworking and in fields entire night to earn food.
Snotlings
Smallest of green skinned. Goblins and orcs use them as slaves for tasks. Not intelligent. Same size as a gnome. Not a threat on their own but as a gang they attack in large numbers.
Phookas
Ireland. (Wales – Bookhas – with bodies of horses or pigs) Heads of human males with bosies of horses. Able to fly but have no wings. Very ugly and destructive, usually hurting crops and children. DO NOT CONTACT!
Salamanders
Mid East. Very powerful. Used in ceremonial magic.
Santa Claus
One of a kind faery. Pagan “Holly King”. The wren and deer are sacred to him. Known throughout the world by many names. May have once been a God who was eventually devalued.
Spriggans
Body guards of the Unseelie Court. Small and round but can inflate with air. Often mistaken for sharp rocks. They live both in the air and in mountains. Dangerously malevolent. Flying evil faeries who are greedy.
Sylphs
Greek/Egyptian. Very small winged humanlike creatures. Very light almost translucent. Wings don’t move but able to defy gravity and float. Helpful to humans.
Tuatha de Danann
Ireland. Earliest conquerors of Ireland. Trooping faeries. Fair and just but a temperament that is warrior like. Resemble humans exactly but smaller. Driven underground by Milesians.
Undines
Greek. Small seahorses with human faces. Stern yet playful. Seductive.
Sirens
Bird women. Sea Nymphs. Women who play sweet enticing music and songs.
Anka
Arabic. Lives over 1700 years. Wing span is the breadth of 5 elephants.
Firebird
Russian. Miraculous. Feathers are silver and gold with eyes that sparkle like crystals. Night birds who illuminate area that it flies over. The feathers from its tail can light up a room. Eats golden apples. When it sings pearls fall from its beak. Able to heal the sick and cure blindness.
Gargoyles
Winged stone creatures that sit and watch from high on buildings. Can sit there for hours before flying down to its prey. Wards off evil.
Harpies
Greek. Two versions. 1) Beautiful winged maidens. 2) Winged monsters with head of an ugly crone and sharp talons. Both versions carry people to the underworld and punishment them then kill them.
Phoenix
Egyptian sun god Ra and Greek god Apollo. Lives in Arabia near cool oasis. Every morning it bathes in a pool while singing a song. Only one alive at a time. When too old and ready to die it will build a nest to settle in then sets itself on fire to burn to death. From these flames comes a new phoenix. It symbolizes immortality, resurrection, and life after death.
Roc
Arabic. Gigantic bird able to carry off an elephant.
Stympalides
Arcadia. Crane like man eating creature. Beaks and claws made from brass. Its feathers are brass that they fire like arrows.
Thunderbirds
Native American. Live amongst the clouds. Monstrous size that can take whales in its talons. Beats wings like the sound of thunder and crackling of lightening. Arrows of lightening flash from it eyes.
Centaur
Greek. Half human, half horse. Lived on Mt. Pelion in Thessaly. Known for drunkenness and carrying off maidens.
Dark elves
Tall and slender noble race with pale skin. Masters of dark magic. Lives in dark cities made of stone. Wears dark colors. Always at war with High Elves. Uses masterly crafted weapons but carries crossbows. Female dark elves who use dark magic are called Witch Elves and are a warrior sisterhood.
Dwarves
Short , muscular, immensely strong and resilient. Both males and females have beards. Broad feet and hands. Stubborn and unforgetting. Represent Age, skill and wealth. Uses technology and a variety of other weapons but carries axes. Takes pride in their works. Hates goblins and orcs, distrusts elves.
Faeries
Typically human like about 12” tall with delicate wings. Tend to be pretty friendly but rarely seen by humans. Sometimes they are guides to lost people. Specific purposes.
Gnomes
small human like race about 1-2’ tall. Protectors of the natural world. Portrayed as little men with beards tending gardens. Adventurers.
Goblins
Smaller than orcs or hobgoblins. Green skinned race. Pointy ears, sharp teeth, thin and scrawny. More intelligent than orcs (their cousins). Often bullied around by bigger relations. Form tribes and uses various weapons. Rides wolves into battle.
High Elves
slim, tall, regal. Noble, beautiful, handsome pale skinned race. Strong and agile, more intelligent and wiser than humans. Live longer than humans. Uses swords, lances, and bows.
Hobgoblins
Related to goblins and orcs. Taller than goblins but not as muscular as orcs. Cowardly and sneaky. Green skinned race with canine teeth, hooked noses and pointy ears. Uses various weapons and rides wolves much like goblins.
Nymphs
Live in very peaceful and secluded areas that are close to natural springs. Hates evil and ugliness. Runs away from violence. Very peaceful creatures. If pushed into a fight will try to use their ability to blind or confuse their attacker with magical power. Resembles humans except with pointy ears. Physically beautiful! Eternally young, charming, intelligent and graceful.
Ogres
Twice as tall as humans. Large muscles and neither stupid nor evil. Relies on muscle power than brains. Many are used as mercenaries by others and will go where the money is good.
Orcs
Green skinned race, large canine teeth and pointy ears. Broader and more muscular with larger heads and thicker skulls and smaller brains than humans. Can survive wounds that would kill any other race. Forms tribes and fights wars with mighty armies.
Merfolk
Humans with fish tails. Beautiful. Carry Tridents as weapons. Live in the seas and can command other sea creatures to help if needed. Both male and female merfolk.
Satyr
Horned man with bottom torso of a goat. Indulges in food, drink and romance. Intelligent. Found in the wild. Usually chestnut brown hair with black hoovese. Mischievous and tricksters by nature. Talent for music and carries Pan pipes to play.
Wood elves
Tall, slender, noble race with pale skin. Lives deep in the forests and are guardians of the natural world. Works with the forests. Very agile. Uses bow but no armour.
Assassin Vine
Semi mobile. Collects other creatures and leaves them at its roots. The main vine of adult plants is 20’ long and 5” thick with smaller vines growing from it. Fruit resembles grapes with a tougher skin and are poisonous to humans. Entangles its victim and constricts it to death.
Treemen
Protector of old. Giant tree looking like creatures. Trunks like legs and great branches for arms. Tough wood like skin. Fear of fire. Hatred towards creatures and man who chop and kill the oldest and biggest trees.
