Our Wedding Day, 1998
We're Kirstin and Rhodri Clark, and we live in Conwy, North Wales which is a beautiful part of the world. Conwy’s right by the sea, on the edge of the Conwy estuary, and has the Snowdonia National Park, with its wonderful mountains, right on it’s doorstep. It’s a small walled town, with a castle and we live just outside the town walls.
Rhodri is from Machen, in South Wales and speaks both Welsh and English. I was born in Surrey, England and brought up in Hampshire. My Dad is English (though we found out when we got married that his Grandmother lived in Conwy as a child) and my Mam is Welsh, from Milford Haven Pembrokeshire. I’ve been trying to learn Welsh for the past few years, but it’s not very easy!
Rhodri and I met when we played in an amateur orchestra in Cardiff in Sept 1995. He’s a journalist and I’m a midwife. Our birthdays are just 8 days apart, with Rhodri being 8 days older than me! We moved to Conwy in June 1997, and got married in the Conwy valley on 19th Sept. 1998.
Our first son, Ifan Morgan, was stillborn on 13th Dec 2000, 14 weeks early, because I developed a very rare blood clotting disorder (TTP). We were warned that we might never be able to have any more children because it put my life, as well as the baby’s life, in danger, so we looked at adopting. We immediately considered going to China because we had both visited there and are fascinated by the country and culture, so we found out as much as we could about ICA. Here's a photo of our son, Gwion, placing some flowers at Ifan's grave.
Then I got told I could try again for another baby, but it wasn’t without its risks. Just as we had given up trying for a baby, and had started down the adoption path (we’d had 2 visits from the Social Worker for our Home Study) I found out I was pregnant and our adoption had to be put on hold.
Our 2nd son, Gwion Morgan, was born on 1st Feb 2003 (the day of the space shuttle disaster) 5 weeks early. Also 1st Feb 2003 was the first day of Chinese New Year of the Sheep! China links already! He is an absolute joy, and now a wonderful toddler of 2 years and 3 months. We knew we won’t risk another pregnancy and so we contacted the Social Worker again in Dec 2003 with plan of restarting our Home Study in the New Year.
