We initially hoped for a July panel, but Barbara said that the paperwork wouldn’t be ready by then. She thought there wasn’t a panel in August, because of the school holidays, and for both of us September wasn’t possible (Barbara was away and we would be on our adoption course). We were horrified that we might not be going to panel until October, as that would definitely mean our papers wouldn’t be in China before Christmas. But then we found out we would be going to panel on 3rd August.
The panel consists of Social Workers, lay people, medical, an adoptee, a person who has adopted, about 12 people in total, plus ourselves and our Social Worker. Until this year the potential adoptive parents didn’t attend panel, and it was just your Social Worker explaining to everyone why she had recommended that you would be suitable to adopt. We were told that we would only be asked a couple of questions, and that it wouldn’t take very long. In the end we were asked several questions over a 45-minute period! It felt like we were getting a grilling. But the panel had never had an ICA before, so they were interested in what would be going on.
Later that day Barbara rang us up to say that we had been approved. A BIG milestone had just been passed!
