August 13th, August 23rd and September 7th were the dates of our overseas adoption course in London, run by the Overseas Adoption Helpline. It was a very good course. There were several other couples, and a couple of single people on the course. Most of us were planning on adopting from China, but one couple wanted India, one couple Sri Lanka, one couple Bulgaria, and one woman Kazakhstan. We were the only couple to have completed our homestudy and passed panel. One couple had started their homestudy, and everyone else had been told by their LA’s that until they had completed this course, they couldn’t start their homestudy. We began to realize that we had a very easy ride and we were lucky to live where we did!
We had a big work book, and the course covered every single aspect of overseas adoption you could think of, concentrating a lot on potential attachment problems, racial problems, not knowing who your birth family was, telling the child’s life story, etc. It was very interesting, and would have been very helpful to have done whilst we had been completing our homestudy, but as we had passed panel, we obviously hadn’t missed much out!
