We awoke to moderate temperatures today, 60's with rain and fog. I guess we were rested because we got up at 5:00am raring to go and the guides did not disappoint. Gosh, these guides are keeping us hopping! We started the tour and shopping at the Jade Place and of course bought a dragon (really cool and beautiful). The tour included an explanation of the types of jade and how to distinguish between them.
Then we were off to the Great Wall. I actually made it up to a second tower and it only took twenty minutes. As we were told, the steps were inconsistent; ranging from 1/2 foot to 1 1/2 feet in height. It was quite a workout but well worth the effort. Our Helping Hand staff in China is excellent: knowledgeable, helpful, and available 24/7 if we need them. Susan and Mable you're the best!!!
Next, we were off to "Yu Long Friendship Store" where we toured the cloisonne factory and had a good lunch. I bought a traditional Chinese pantset with hat in red, adorable. Kelly found a child's tea set and trinket boxes with pandas painted on both. The Summer Palace was our last stop on the schedule today. Vendors galore greeted us as we entered, pushing Gucci bags, Rolex watches, and other merchandise. In spite of the vendors, the palace was interesting and beautiful with bamboo gardens, ornate sculptures, and a dragon boat ride. Our tour of the palace required more walking, but we didn't mind as the weather had improved and the exercise enabled us to work off the lunch.
Stay tuned tomorrow for more touring with the Nichols. Also, in the afternoon we fly to Nanchang in Jiangxi Province.
