Once again, we awoke feeling rested and ready for another day of touring. Before I start however, I do want to say a word about our website. Sorry to all about the delay with pictures. Kelly said that our connection was very slow in Beijing and the picture size was too big. So, you need to have software that shrinks the size of the image before it is emailed and also use zipping tools. The good news at the Gloria Hotel in Nanchang is that the connection speed is much faster uploading and downloading! Our accommodations here at the Gloria Hotel are most comfortable (and the bed's not bad either). However, some of our travel mates are saying the beds are too hard. Upon entering our room, we enjoyed a nice surprise of a crib set up and ready to go. What a wonderful surprise and I must say that it brought out some happy tears. Another pleasant surprise was that our local guide, Sissy, faxed questions to the orphanages so that we all have updated information. As if that wasn't enough, Sissy had the orphanages prepare the Finding Ads for all our children. Thank you Helping Hand for having such a great staff! And Thank you Sissy! Chairman Mao's commanding picture hangs impressively in Tian An Men Square and stares down like a watchful observer over his people.
It is a constant reminder of China's past. It is quite a contrast to the obvious capitalistic influence that visitors see today - beggars, aggressive street peddlers, vendors, and tourists from all over the world. The military presence that we have seen throughout our trip is especially evident. There are numerous guards posted all over the square, and they don't seem to have a sense of humor!
After we escaped the square and its many peddlers, it was time for a 15 minute walk to The Forbidden City.
The Forbidden City
The Forbidden City was built by the second emperor of China during the Ming Dynasty. It is also called "the city within a city". Ornate and beautiful carvings abound from every structure and are filled with color. The roofs are adorned with 9 dragons said to be the sons of the emperor. In China, the dragon is an important symbol and brings good luck. The emperor is said to have descended from the dragon. We exited the Forbidden City through the Imperial Garden and could not resist a picture under one of the many beautiful trees.
After a busy morning of touring and walking we were ready for a break. Can you guess what we did next? SHOPPING!!! So, we were off to the "Bang Fu Chun" Pearl Store. We learned a little about types of oysters, harvesting, and pearl color and quality. We even bought earrings and a necklace for Sophia when she gets married.
Another exciting day has ended, and tomorrow is Gotcha Day!
Thanks,
