We had some major milestones today. First, this morning, Lydia let Kyle feed her the bottle and he walked around with her for about an hour. Later, she let Sydney hold her for quite a while. They went for a walk in the hall and she went to sleep.
Then, we went out for a walk and we put her in the stroller and she was content, AND, she fell asleep and took a good long nap!
She has been really fighting sleep and it's been quite an ordeal to get her to sleep so this feels like an enormous miracle. It is cold and rainy here today. We had a group outing planned to a big park in Guangzhou that has a mountain. It was cancelled because of the weather. We may go another day if the weather clears. I've heard that it is supposed to get warm the day we leave. This is probably more pleasant than the heat that a lot of people experience. When we first got to China I was floored with all the weird foods that are on the breakfast buffet and even more surprised to see people eating them. Now Kyle and I are eating the weird stuff right along with everyone else. Not everything, mind you, but we have discovered some things that we really like. Notice that I didn't include Sydney. I think she has had enough Chinese food to last her a lifetime. She's not complaining... much. She sticks to the traditional Western breakfast foods.
Kyle has been a trooper but he is starting to have Dr. Pepper withdrawals. Ha! We are having a wonderful time but our thoughts are more and more turning to home. I've started packing and planning for the trip. Only three more days to spend here. I'm kind of sad about leaving, but ready to get home.
Tonight we are going to a Thai restaurant as a group. Our guide is going and she always directs us to foods she thinks we will enjoy. There is a restaurant along the street that has full windows next to the area where they are preparing food. We like to peek in and see what they are fixing. We have seen whole raw birds like pigeons and we saw a bowl of chicken heads. One day they had alligator parts out as advertisement. I think it is a Cantonese restaurant. Our guide said that in China they have a saying that the Cantonese people eat anything with four legs except the dining room table and chairs! Allison's family has joined us again, much to Sydney's delight. She has missed Allison. I may not have mentioned that four of our 19 families are adopting little boys with special needs. They went to the provinces where the boys were when we came to Guangzhou. Allison's family adopted a 15-month-old boy with a cleft palate. He's really cute. Tonight we went to the Thai restaurant (I mentioned earlier) with a group of us. It was very good...
(this is his family's second adoption from China) eating squid. We had the same thing We had fried squid, fried rice in a pineapple with seafood (also squid), and sweet and sour chicken with cashews. We might go back there.
with an orange sauce
