Tandy Branham: Red Deck Wins

Tournament Results: 18th Place 4-3

I love going to Roanoke, I believe this is due to the fact that almost the entire Team makes sure they make plans to go to these PTQs. We always have such a killer time and its trips like these that Team Wiseguy lives for! I decide to go with my good old RDW since it placed me 9th last weekend in Knoxville. I change a couple cards in the board and feel pretty confident going into the tournament.

Round 1: Charles Anderson playing Red Rock 2-0

Game 1: I hate coming this far and playing somone I know first round, especially when there are over 100 people attending, but oh well it happens pretty often. I apply some pressure and he doesn't see any baloths or kokusho, so win rather easily. Game 2: pretty much the same thing, except I burn him out this game, and there is one turn where he makes him Treetop Village a critter so that he can play his FTK and kill it, LOL! Sorry Noob, I still wish I had given you the win...

Round 2: Scepter Chant 2-1

Game 1: I run him over before he gets the lock on me, and when he finally does get the Scepter Chant on me he is at 4 life and I have a seal and fanatic in play. I luckily topdeck a lava dart for the win. Game 2: he locks me early but i have a scroll in play... I have 3 MORE SCROLLS IN HAND!!! but the problem is that I cant get the other stuff out of my hand and every time I active the scroll he doesnt choose a scroll... I think I hit him 3 times with it in 9 turns! But then he manages to get an angel in play and I scoop. Game 3: he mulligans to 6 and I know he is in trouble when he moxes out a morphed angel 2nd turn.. So I kill it and win rather quickly.

Round 3: Red Scepter Wins 0-2

Game 1: This guy has built a RDW that is invincible to the mirror match, with 4 scrolls and 4 scepters main deck I cant do anything. Game 2: I get him to 7 life and have everything tapped with tangle wire. I need to topdeck a firecat for the win, but I don't so I lose. I start wishing here that I had put those Overloads in the SB, but oh well...

Round 4: Gobbos 2-0

Game 1: I start to see the power of Port+Tangle wire in this game as it keeps him on 1 mountain and he cant get his Warchiefs/Seige gangs into play... I win this one slowly with burn and tapping. Game 2: He sees 2 mountains again, and I make sure he only has 1 active with my port+ tangle wire again, haha I love those cards in this deck. I finish him off with a cat and a lava dart

Round 5: Ted Knutson playing UW Control 2-0

Game 1: I swarm him early and even though he has main deck silver knights, I have main deck scrolls, so I win fast and furiously, but he does stile a sac land which upset me a bit, lol. Game 2: he goes first and stifles my sac land... I hate that card... anyway even though he gets a powder keg out against me I don't see ANY of my one drops except a lavamancer, and I burn him out with the infamous 2 Volcanic Hammer/4 Seal of Fire.. HAHA! Star City Editor WHO!??!?!

Round 6: Brian Kowal (Pro Tour Player) playing 3 color Scepter Tog 2-1

Game 1: I wish I had won game 1, but he gets a scepter with Heroes Reunion the turn before I can kill him... ahh well... Game 2: I get out the Pillar/Vortex lock on him, and even though he explosives my pillar, I cast another one next turn and win fast... Game 3: He gets a double Scepter/FireandIce lock on me and I cant do anything about it... I mulliganed to 5 this game too, so I wasn't really in the game... after this match Im totally pissed I didn't add the overloads to the side, since I had said the night before I would regret not adding them... ahhh well there's always next PTQ I guess? And I still have a chance at T8 if I win next round...

Round 7: GrowaTog 0-2

Game 1: He plays a tog, and even though I try to burn all of the cards out of his hand, it still lives and I end up losing pretty quickly... Game 2: second turn chill, I lose... not much more can be said... so I end up 4-3 and have a bittersweet taste in my mouth afterwards... I was so close to T8 I could feel it... better luck next time I guess...

Overall I had a decent day with RDW and I wouldnt choose any other deck over it. What made this trip even more great was Saturday night out on the town... we had such a blast and I know Ill never forget that evening... big thanks go out to Glen and Brian Marcus for showing us the highlights of Roanoke!!!
