1. READ THE PROBLEM CAREFULLY.

2. IDENTIFY RELEVANT INFORMATION (WHAT IS GIVEN)

3. FIND WHAT THE QUESTION WANTS (WHAT IS UNKNOWN)

4. IF IT’S NOT CLEAR, RE-READ IT

5. TRY TO WRITE A SIMPLER PROBLEM USING SIMPLER NUMBERS

6. USE GRAPHS, DIAGRAMS, TABLES TO ILLUSTRATE THE PROBLEM


7. YOU CAN WORK THE PROBLEM BACKWARDS

8. TRY TO ACT THE PROBLEM OUT IF YOU CAN

9. ASSIGN VARIABLES TO THE UNKOWNS

10. WRITE THE EQUATION(S) TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM

11. SOLVE THE EQUATION

12. CHECK YOUR ANSWER. DOES IT MAKE SENSE? IS THE ANSWER REASONABLE?

13. IF YOU CAN’T SOLVE THE PROBLEM, USE THE GUESS AND CHECK TECHNIQUE.
