Project #1

Mathematical Modeling

Purpose: To find mathematical models which describe the changes in volume and height of water filling a glass container as functions of time.

Instructions:

  1. With the tap water running, fill a glass container and record the height and volume of water at each time according to the table below. You may have to repeat the calculations a number of times. (Use average volume and average height):

Time(Sec.)

0

Height (cm)

Vol.(ml)

b) Determine polynomial functions that relates volume with time , and another that relates Height with time.

c) Graph your functions from part (b).

d) From the graphs of part (c), estimate the volume at 30 seconds and the height at 30 seconds

Estimated Height at 30 seconds:____________

Estimated Volume at 30 seconds:___________

e) Calculate the % change in volume and height (refer to the table and part (d))

f) How effective is your mathematical model? Explain possible limitations.
