Cops will accept unregistered guns
Winnipeg police officers will be "more than happy" to take any firearms gun owners would rather dump than register before the Jan. 1 deadline, said police spokesman Insp. Roy Smith. "Our calculations show approximately 69,000 weapons will change hands before the firearms licence requirement takes effect Jan. 1," Smith said. "Anyone wanting to drop off their guns, we'll destroy them at a smelter." Owners wanting to dispose of their guns should go to their nearest police station, not a service centre, said Smith. The firearm must be unloaded and left in the trunk of the vehicle while the owner goes into the station and speaks to an officer. An officer will retrieve the weapon from the vehicle. Police will also accept restricted and prohibited weapons under "a form of amnesty," said Smith. "We're not taking a blind eye, but we'll be more than happy to take a weapon off the street. If we realize the weapon came from a break-in, we will inquire how it came into the person's possession," he said. TWO GUNS A DAY The initiative was sparked by the number of people voluntarily turning over their firearms. In the past two months police have received an average of two guns a day. Anyone unable to travel to a police station to surrender a firearm may also call 986-6222 to have a cruiser car retrieve it. Anyone wanting to turn over a restricted or prohibited weapon must obtain a transport permit from the Canadian Firearms Centre at 1-800-731-4000, ext 8002.
